Vester Lee Flanagan, aka, Bryce Williams took the lives of Allison Parker and Adam Ward of WDBJ this morning and is currently in critical condition after shooting himself. While more details come out about his motive, it appears race was a role to a degree. Williams has made many lawsuits against some of his bosses including WDBJ.
In one of the live tweets Williams made after the shooting, he accused Parker of racism. Prior to this however, he filed a lawsuit against WTWC-TV in Tallahassee, Florida accusing them of being racist. Bryce Williams claimed he was called a ‘monkey’ by one of his bosses.
Also, during a story about a black suspect who had ‘gold and green teeth’ a white supervisor referenced him as just another thug and that he had ‘collard greens’ in his teeth. Williams claimed to have heard a manager tell another black employee to stop speaking “ebonics”. After making multiple complaints about these comments and going to the Florida Commission on Human Relations, his contract was not renewed.
WTWC denied race was a factor in their decision to not bring Williams back to the station. Williams was said to have been a bad employee who used a lot of profanity, refused to follow directions and budgetary cuts were what ultimately led to him not being brought back according to his former employer.
