Mercutio Southhall Jr. attended a Donald Trump rally on November 21, 2015 in the majority African-American city of Birmingham, Alabama. At the rally Southhall began shouting “Black Lives Matter.” This is not a first interaction #BlackLivesMatter has had at presidential rally. It is not uncommon for protesters to attend political gatherings as this has been evident at other presidential candidates rallies in the past.
The Southhall claimed he was repeatedly called a ‘nigger’ and a ‘monkey’ by members of the crowd and that one tried to strangle him as he was pinned to the ground.
He added: ‘When I wake up in the morning, I pretty much expect trouble. We’re not the niggers from the 60s. I believe in defending myself, defending my people and sticking up for my people.’
Southall’s claims came as Donald Trump appeared to defend those who brawled with the protester on Saturday.
‘Maybe he should have been roughed up, because it was absolutely disgusting what he was doing,’ Trump told Fox News.
‘I have a lot of fans, and they were not happy about it. And this was a very obnoxious guy who was a trouble-maker who was looking to make trouble.’
The Republican front-runner could be heard shouting ‘get the hell out of here’ as the mob of white supporters attacked Southall.
The self-proclaimed billionaire also shouted ‘throw him out’ as he tried to continue with his speech in front of 3,000 people.
The melee started after Southall took off his sweater to reveal a ‘Black Lives Matter’ shirt. Is this the type of man America wants to lead the country? Will Trump help improve racial tensions in this country or or further divide America?
