Bounce TV, the first-and-only over-the-air broadcast television network for African-Americans, will honor Black History Month throughout February with a line-up of critically acclaimed and award-winning motion pictures, all with historical significance and relevance. Highlights of Bounce TV’s Black History Month 2016 celebration:
The Color Purple – The eleven-time Oscar-nominated epic that depicts the life of an African-American woman in the south during the early 19th century. As most teenagers are going off to school or out on a date, Celie Johnson is struggling to maintain her life after the death of her mother. At 16 years old, she marries an older man who abuses her for over 40 years, but despite all of her troubles she remains hopeful for a more fulfilling life. Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg and Danny Glover star.
Amistad – Director Steven Spielberg’s four-time Oscar-nominated drama chronicles a slave revolt in 1839 onboard a cargo ship traveling towards the northeastern coast of America. Against all odds, one enslaved man fights to make sure justice and freedom are equal rights for all.
Ghosts of Mississippi – Whoopi Goldberg plays Myrlie Evers, a woman yearning to get justice for the murder of her husband, Civil Rights activist Medgar Evers, who can’t seem to convince a racially-biased jury to fairly examine her case in Mississippi in 1963.
Men of Honor – Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as Carl Brashear, the first African American and first amputee diver for the U.S. Navy in this memorable biopic.
Sounder – 1972’s Oscar®-winning Best Picture is a coming of age tale that follows a poor African American family of sharecroppers living in Louisiana in 1933. Nathan Lee Morgan (Paul Winfield, Oscar® for Best Actor) is convicted and sent to prison after stealing food, leaving his wife Rebecca (Cicely Tyson, Oscar® for Best Actress) and oldest son David (Kevin Hooks) to care for his family.
Cadillac Records – The rise of the legendary music label Chess Records is narrated by Cedric the Entertainer and stars Adrien Brody as Leonard Chess, a music loving entrepreneur who wants to bring a new sound to the airways by scouting African American-talent. Soon his record label includes the legendary Etta James (Played by Beyonce), Chuck Berry and Charles “Muddy” Waters. Columbus Short also stars.
