Not long ago, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor agreed to an Aug. 26 fight.

This matchup is highly anticipated because McGregor has become a rising star in the MMA world. The Irishman not only holds the UFC Lightweight belt, but he’s also highly entertaining in press conferences.

Of course, McGregor must be more than just entertaining to beat Mayweather.

The latter is a perfect 49-0 in his career, with notable wins over Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Álvarez, Miguel Cotto, “Sugar” Shane Mosely, Ricky Hatton, and Oscar De La Hoya.

It’s no surprise that Mayweather is heavily favored in this fight. Especially since McGregor has never boxed at the professional level.

But does the UFC legend have a chance? Moreover, do the odds make McGregor worth a long-shot bet in this fight?

Let’s look at the odds and prop bets surrounding the Mayweather-McGregor fight. We’ll also analyze the bout and discuss why McGregor may be worth considering.

Analysis of Mayweather vs McGregor Odds

McGregor is an elite fighter who’s risen to the top of MMA. But again, he’s never stepped into a professional boxing ring. And in late August, he’ll do so for the first time against the greatest fighter of this generation.

This being said, it’s no surprise that McGregor is only being given +710 odds. This could earn you a fortune if you bet right.

But Mayweather definitely feels like the safer bet here. He’s faced the best the sport has to over the past decade and beaten everybody thrown his way. In fact, “Money” actually retired at the end of 2015 because there were no worthy opponents or paydays left.

McGregor definitely doesn’t look like a worthy opponent. But with each fighter getting $100 million, the money is certainly there for Mayweather.

    Can McGregor Extend the Fight?

The question remains if McGregor can make this match last more than a few rounds. One thing he has going for him is that Money is more tactician than somebody with knockout power (26 KOs in 49 fights).

McGregor also has age on his side, given that he’s 28 and Mayweather is 40. And for what’s it’s worth, former British heavyweight champ Tyson Fury predicts the upset.

“I think McGregor will do him inside one round,” Fury said. “I think Conor McGregor will knock him out in the first 35 seconds, much like he did to Jose Aldo, to be honest.”

For context, McGregor and Aldo boxed for the first half minute of their UFC 194 bout. McGregor dropped Aldo with a right, then finished him off to quickly end the fight.

Freddie Roach doesn’t Think McGregor Has a Chance

Legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach, who’s watched McGregor spar other pro boxers at his LA-based gym, offered a different take than Fury.

“He’s not that good of a fighter,” Roach told Fight Hub TV. “He’s fun to watch. He’s a character … He’ll let his hands go. He put himself on a very high level. He’s more of a four-round fighter at this point.”

If we’re to go with Roach’s analysis, then you might want to make some prop bets on this fight ending in three rounds or less. But even if this is the case, it should be a fun match and quite a spectacle.
