The 60th Grammy Awards Ceremony was a night full of surprises, politics, and some amazing performances. Hosted by James Corden, the awards show took place Sunday night in Madison Square Garden in New York City, the first time the awards show has been in New York in 15 years.
Bruno Mars swept the award show winning 6 awards for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best R& B song of the year, Best R&B album and Best R&B performance.
Kendrick Lamar also took home a collection of trophies winning 4 Grammys for Best rap performance, Best Rap/Sung performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Rap Album.
Kendrick’s wins were probably one of the biggest night in the world of Hip-Hop, but it is also one of the most upsetting nights for the 8 time nominated Jay Z, who didn’t win a single award for his album 4:44. At the pre-Grammy gala Saturday, Jay-Z was honored with the Industry Icon award and talked about his evolving feelings on the ceremony. “I realized that art is super-subjective. The academy, they are human like we are and they are voting on things they like. And we can pretend we don’t care, but we do,” he said.
Kendrick Lamar opened the show with a powerful performance that featured guest appearances by the legendary Dave Chappelle, Bono, and The Edge.

Childish Gambino performed “Terrified” from his acclaimed album, Awaken, My Love!, Gambino showcased his wide-ranging vocal abilities wearing all white, giving the crowd a seductive and enchanting performance.

DJ Khaled made his Grammy debut featuring Rihanna & Bryson Tiller, they performed their smash hit “Wild Thoughts”. Rihanna had the crowd hypnotized with her sultry dance moves. Surprisingly DJ Khaled didn’t have his handsome son Asahd on stage with him performing, but he did open the performance saying “They said I would never perform at the Grammys,” “They played themselves.”

Janelle Monae made an appearance at the 60th annual awards show introducing Kesha with a powerful message. Monae used her introduction to deliver a message on behalf of women in the industry: “We come in peace, but we mean business.” “It’s not just going on in Hollywood, it’s not just going on in Washington, it’s right here in our industry as well,” she said. “And just as we have the power to shape culture, we also have the power to undo a culture that does not serve us well.”

Other performances of the night included Sting & Shaggy, Elton John & Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris & Eric Church, Lady Gaga, Logic feat. Alessia Cara & Khalid, Ben Platt, Patti LuPone, Argentina, Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Zuleyka Rivera, and SZA.
The show couldn’t end without some shots at President Trump, and instead of coming up with original material, the Grammys left the work to Michael Wolff and his recently released White House exposé Fire and Fury. In a short video clip, several celebrities pretended to audition for the spoken-word version of the book.
