On August 16, 2018, the world was in mourning as we lost a Legend, Aretha Franklin. Hundreds of fans from far and wide came out to her Tuesday memorial service and public viewing. Some even sleeping on the sidewalks, with hopes of being the first into her wake at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit, Michigan. She arrived in a classic white LaSalle Sedan, like the queen she is. Donning scarlet red in honor of her membership in the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, she lays crossed legged in her casket. Surrounded by soft pink and lavender roses, her casket has “The Queen of Soul” engraved on the side in gold lettering.
Many artists have spoken about her legacy. Most have taken to social media to express their condolences, but some have been vocal about the singer’s impact. Smokey Robinson, who’s known her since she was just a little girl, says Franklin will be remembered as “one of the greatest singers to ever open their mouths.” In an interview with Rolling Stone, he touches on their childhood and her activism, reminiscing on their work together. Madonna has even paid tribute. Though she received quite a bit of kickback, many suggesting that the “tribute” was self-indulgent. Nonetheless, her legacy speaks for itself.
Her funeral, which will take place Friday, Aug. 31, will be live streamed online and on television. Although I’m sure the guest list is very exclusive, we’ll all be able to pay our respects in spirit.
