Columbus Short and Vivica A. Fox were in the A Thursday night at Phipps Plaza AMC to host the premier screening of the crime drama True To The Game 2.
Executive Produced by Manny Halley, the sequel to the 2017 hit film – based on the urban fiction novels written by Teri Woods, opens today, Nov. 6.
Cast on hand for the viewing included stars Andra Fuller, Erica Peoples, Jeremy Meeks, Starletta DuPois, Iyana Halley, Teddy Rux (Black Ink Crew NY), as well as the film’s director Jamal Hill.
Other attendees included Pierre “Pee” Thomas of Quality Control Music, Barton Fitzpatrick (“The Chi”), and Woods herself.
Vivica A. Fox, who was already a fan of the books, explained how she first became involved in the series.
“I was actually approached by my very good friend Columbus Short who said, ‘Yo, were doing Terry Woods’ True to the Game book.’
I was like Terry!!! Oh my God! I’ve been a huge fan since the book first came out and I wish I had the power back then to get it done. But when Columbus contacted me and said we want you to be a part of this… We and Manny independently got things done…
‘Cause this is what we all have to learn about being film makers. We have to help and reach back and help somebody. Independently everybody came on board out of love in making this book a movie. And tonight is a celebration because we deserve movies and moments like tonight.”
As many may recall, Columbus Short’s character “Quadir Richards” was killed in the first installment but that didn’t stop the show as the ladies flip the script this time for the action paced fem fatale gangster thriller. Producing a film is no easy task and being Black and accomplishing this feat deserves some acknowledgement. Short gave Halley his props, adding,
“Let me give you some juice Manny. It’s so hard to make movies and people don’t understand that. And as a Black man, you said I’m going to do this. You bumped your head a few times and ran right into a brick wall but guess what. You made it all right.
That’s humility. You put your ego aside and you made it right and put out a project that’s being successful and I’m proud of you brother and that’s why I’m here and came back to support.”
True To The Game 2 also features Lil Mama, Rotimi, Waka Flocka, Bre-Z, Tamar Braxton, and Darius McCrary and takes place in Philadelphia, New York and California. Fox also added,
“We gave a lot of young actors the opportunity to be on the big screen with established and veteran actors like Columbus, Starletta and I and I love to watch their careers evolve and you see the beautiful rainbow of us represented in this movie.”
The soundtrack is filled with bangers too and is executive produced by Wheezy Beatz and Manny Halley. Available for streaming now, the ferocious score includes tracks from Future, Jeremiah, Derez De’Shon, Fabolous and London on the Track just to name a few.
London on the Track also makes his acting debut in the film which also houses the Dej Loaf, Nicole Bus and Dave East new ghetto love anthem “Star.”
True To The Game 3 has already been filmed too and will be in theatres in February. Halley and Woods also partnered on her novel series Dutch which will also have its theatrical release on Black Friday during Thanksgiving weekend and Halley has a new television series in the works so stay tuned for more.
Check the trailer below and hit the theaters tonight and this weekend if you can. True To The Game 2 will also be available OnDemand the week before Christmas.
