Senator George McGovern died this morning at his Sioux City South Dakota home the age of 90 years old. A lifelong Democrat, McGovern was integral figure in the party and was influential in drawing African-Americans to the party in the 50’s and 60’s.

He opposition the Vietnam war, a stance that would later be  the downfall for his Presidential campaign against Richard Nixon in 1972. His death was announced by his family today. He had been moved to hospice care in recent days after being treated for several health problems in the last year. He had a home in Mitchell, S.D., where he had spent his formative years.

McGovern, found his way to Washington DC at the age of 34. By then he had already taught college as a Professor and was a decorated World War II bomber pilot. He was elected to the Senate in 1962 where he voted consistently for civil rights. Most will remember McGovern for losing to Nixon. In that race, Nixon pulled in 520 electoral votes to McGovern’s 17, making it the most lopsided victory in Presidential history.

In a statement made by President, Barack Obama he called McGovern “a champion for peace” who was a “statesman of great conscience and conviction.”

He left behind 3 daughters, 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
