Paralyzed former football player Eric Legrand delivered an emotional speech Sunday at Rutgers University’s commencement exercises.
Legrand was inflicted a paralyzing injury in a game back in 2010. He was dressed in a cap and gown during Sunday’s commencement and was greeted with a roaring standing ovation.
In his speech Legrand alluded to his own experience being paralyzed and used it by stating, “Don’t ever let someone tell you you can’t do something.” He stated this as he was moving his shoulders forward.
Legrand, the former Rutgers defensive tackle, was dealt the paralyzing injury while making a special teams tackle on a kickoff in a game against Army. His progression is noted in the fact that he is now able to breathe on his own and stand on his own with the support of a metal frame.
Legrand received a degree in labor relations on stage. He is amongst the estimated 16,431 graduates in this year class that includes students from a variety of branches in the Rutgers University system.
