Hip-hop journalist, radio personality and show producer, Skyy Hook

Most often, history is something we just read about. If we are lucky, drawn, filmed or still images accompany those texts and give them some life. There is no substitute though for hearing stories from those who actually lived them and that is exactly what the most recent students of California State University Northridge have been getting in the Anthropology department.

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences CIPHER (Center for the Interdisciplinary Pursuit of Hip-Hop Evolution & Research) program were presented a class from January to May that treated students to this phenomenon during its inaugural semester. Hip-Hop journalist, radio personality and show producer, Skyy Hook, in her new role as visiting scholar introduced a roster of hip-hop legends, historians and influencers as her class guests over the course of the semester. Each speaker detailed their knowledge of Hip-Hop’s history and their own contributions in this one-of-a-kind program created by Dr. Searcy for the purpose of helping students explore a culture that is not solely defined by music. Through these shared experiences, CIPHER students were able to bridge the generational gap between hip-hop’s origins and the world-dominating force it has become. Skyy Hook’s guests ran the gamut from legendary rappers and producers, to radio show producers and journalists; each of whom has made a sizeable contribution to the creation and documentation of the culture of Hip-Hop. Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, Naughty By Nature, Kid from Kid ‘n Play, Kwamè, Special Ed, KXNG Crooked, Sway and King Tech, Rich Nice, Jerry Barrow, Alvin Blanco, Dart Adams, Mr. Mec, DJ Eclipse, Jeff Robinson, Ron Mills, Kelly Jackson, Mr Len and Sean Williams are just some of the incredible people that stepped up to enlighten this first crop of hip-hop anthropology scholars.

“I really wanted to show our younger generations that Hip-Hop of all eras is important.” Skyy Hook, who designed the class explains. “There were some who felt teaching this was a lost cause but my students were absolutely magnificent this semester. The class themselves proved the naysayers wrong. They allowed themselves to approach the topic with an open mind, a willing heart and a desire for knowledge, which is really all I asked of them.” She continued. “I simply wanted them to see the people who made the culture of Hip-Hop possible and to understand that without their contributions Hip-Hop couldn’t still exist. I’m so grateful to Dr. Searcy and Dr. Sheld for allowing me the time and space to do it and to Caleb, Abagail and Takiya for helping me look as if it were effortless.”

“We see Hip-Hop classes in various departments but not in Anthropology.” Dean Dr. Yan Searcy, creator of the CIPHER program shares. “It is the perfect placement as the course examines the culture of Hip-Hop and not just the music. The guests who came to the class were the architects of modern Hip-Hop. I am certain that no other university classroom can boast the same occurring in one semester or even a decade for that matter.”

Skyy Hook was the ideal candidate to spearhead CSUN’s new CIPHER program for Dr. Searcy and bring his vision to life. Her many years of Hip-Hop journalism for some of the most recognized media brands and experience as a co-host on “The World Famous Wake Up Show” on Shade 45/SiriusXM with King Tech, Sway and DJ Revolution combined with her indomitable passion for the culture of Hip-Hop ensured that the students would receive a thorough understanding of how an urban street music genre grew into a global cultural influence that touches everything from fashion to politics.

The two plan to keep this program going with the upcoming fall semester.

Today South Florida based artist HeartBreak Redd delivers his new single “Unfortunate.”  Combining the sounds of hustler music with the sounds of his native Trinidad, HeartBreak Redd’s music reflects hismid-90’s New Jersey upbringing while also shining bright lights on his lavish Miami lifestyle that he’s come to enjoy. Reflecting the pain of hustling and the streets while also glamorizing the Miami life, “Unfortunate” is a breakthrough song for Heartbreak Redd that will bring him into focus for the masses. The single is now available for fans on all the streaming platforms as of May 28th.

“It’s a real deep record and it’s basically just talking about, it’s Unfortunate, I guess basically that people have preyed on my downfall, you know what I am saying? Unfortunate, is a record that I recorded like three years ago. I recorded it in my old apartment, on Brickell. It was the first crib that I had, on the east side of 95 in Miami,” Hearbreak Redd said. “For the Summer we are working on getting organized and we’re working on some singles and so on and so forth. We’re just trying to, like, put out something that’s diversified, something that’s just attracting that more than one type of audience, but like, an accumulation of many audiences in a sense.”

Born in Trinidad but residing in Miami, Heartbreak Redd’s mom moved him to America  in the mid 90’s for better opportunities and he’s travelled back and forth from the U.S. to Trinidad ever since

“I was born in Trinidad, a lot of my childhood life in Trinidad. You know what I am saying? If you know anything about Trinidad, it’s a third world country so my mom came to America at an early age, to obviously sacrifice to get me here in America and she was successful. So I was able to come to America during the mid-90s and I’ve been going back and forth ever since,” Heartbreak said.  “As I grew up, I went through different phases as I traveled around to different states and so on and so forth. Then I ended up just parking for an undetermined amount of time right here in Miami, like the last four or five years.”

Speaking on his varied sound that combines Hip-Hop with Reggae, Soca Calypso, Heartbreak Redd’s sound is diverse and encompasses the diversity of Caribbean cultures that will help him develop that crossover appeal.

“I am very diversified with the music that I put out, I don’t favor one type of style or type of individual. When I say style, I mean, in the same genre, where things always just sound similar. I just make music based on the feel, but like I said, I’m from Trinidad, so, I was raised up around Soca Calypso and Reggae, you know what I am saying? Then I came to America and got introduced to Hip-Hop real early, so, as I grew up, and went through different experiences and stuff like that in my life, I was able to grow on both ends, in a sense. I’m just being more diversified in making music and creating music in a sense.”

Part of the importance for him to travel back and forth to Trinidad is that he invests and gives back to the community there, providing the youth with computers and musical instruments so that they can grow and advance their knowledge of recording music and creating songs.

“When I was their age, not even eight, and I was way younger than them, I always wanted someone up in the states that could show me, talk to me and like tap in with me.  You want to do things for the youth, you want to send back some gear, you want to send back some equipment, you want to power up their passion and shit like that. It means everything to me, doing something for the future heads,” Heartbreak said.

Today Anastasia Hera delivers her new single, “Big Tuna,” a song about being who you are and having pride in your life and identity. The song will find it’s home on her upcoming EP titled, This Is Anastasia.

Produced by Ty On Da Track, her new EP comes full circle bringing to light all the talents and abilities that Anastasia Hera has been showcasing, singing and songwriting behind the scenes for other artists.

“Big Tuna is about feeling like a big fish in a small pond. It’s about taking up space, making noise, and being unapologetic about who you are. Big Tuna is how it feels to know what’s meant for me, and stepping proudly into my destiny,” Anastasia Hera said. “Anyone who strives for bigger and better will be able to relate to this record. However we move through this life, I believe it’s important to focus on confidence rather than competition. I think that comes through in the spirit of the song; in the lyrics, the delivery, and definitely the beat.”

Starting music at an early age as just a listener, Anastasia Hera would write out the lyrics to her favorite songs. When asked how she started making music she said she found her voice writing music for other artists as many singers and songwriters have done in the past.

“I spent a few years writing songs for other artists, and eventually found my own voice. Once I decided what I wanted to say in my art, I started working on how to deliver it: clever lyrics, interesting cadences, catchy melodies, rich harmonies. But everything began with studying the craft,” she explained.

Gearing up for the Summer, Anastasia Hera has been focused on developing new fans and capturing the live performances with her band.

I’m looking forward to pushing my new EP, “This is Anastasia,” and earning some new fans. I really believe in this body of work, and I truly believe I can touch anyone with these songs. So I’m determined to present the songs to my fans in new and interesting ways. I’m putting my energy into filming groundbreaking visuals, capturing live performances with my band, and packaging this amazing work in innovative ways,” she added.

Recently West Coast artist Wallet Green delivered the new visual to his Summer friendly track “Party Party.” Released via his own Mill Ticket record label, Wallet Green has spent the past few years working in casting for music videos providing extras for everyone from Cardi B to TDE to Tyga with video vixens for their latest releases.

Along the way Wallet has also developed his own music and music video that utilized his industry contacts and connects to shoot ultra high quality music videos similar to the artist he cast models for on a regular basis.

“The record Party Party is produced by my boy Mojo, he got some nice production so you will definitely be hearing some other joints from me and him in the future. It’s called Party Party because when we were on lockdown we weren’t really hitting any events and I wanted a House Party type vibe to it. I wanted to have fun and give people a sense of what we were going through. Right now I’m about to drop single after single, so my job right now is just to flood them with good music and if I decide to drop an EP which I probably will, that will be around 4 videos into the project.

While Wallet admits that he hasn’t dropped a song in a while, he has vowed to his loyal fans that he will continue to drop new content in 2021.

“In all honesty the quarantine and lockdown had me bored and so coming out of the pandemic I wanted to do something and I felt everything was just too idle so I wanted to make something shake,” Wallet Green said.

Maintaining his DIY business model common in West Coast artists, Wallet Green provided the clothing, models, crew and set as this video was directed by Wallet himself along with the help of JByrd of Networkingz.

Executed with ease this visual undoubtedly harkens back to movie scenes from Next Friday and House Party, as Wallet Green makes his way through the party with a bottle of Hennessy and plenty of smoke rolled up.

“Our company is called Mill Ticket, we stand on four cornerstones: music, film, fashion and sports. Our biggest buzz from the brand comes from the casting side of things, I am a musical artist, but our company does everything. As far as casting goes, we cast short films, shows, commercials and have worked with everyone from Jeezy to Lady Gaga, so we are really proud of the work we have done with that portion of our company. We have worked with music videos in all genres and have even worked with Drake, Migos the list goes on and on. Nine times out of ten if you are booking for high quality, high end music videos, you are getting the models from Mill Ticket Casting.”

In addition to casting and music, Wallet Green also has his hand in the cannabis industry where he is well known for being a cannabis connoisseur.

“I got a different sound than you are used to coming out of the LA region, I have more of a mainstream type flow and hopefully I take off like I plan to do, but I think my cannabis brands and my 4:20 people should know I’m about that greenery and I specialize in cannabis. I will be giving you guys a good weed song, so look out for that real soon!”

The production features another Nashville legend Fate Eastwood, creating a new sound for the record.

The visual is beyond the industry standard and feels more like scenes from a movie than a music video. Killah Calico seems to level up with each release and has us locked in and waiting for the drop of his highly anticipated project “Da Man On Tha Low”.

Today ATL rap veteran OG KV, CEO of Big Play Entertainment, delivers new music for the streets in the form of a new single “Down” that will be featured on his accompanying project OG Music.  The song “Down” tackles the issues of police brutality and all that goes into the police using their badge to do anything and everything but protect and serve the people.

Famed for discovering “Racks on Racks” hitmaker YC and developing underground Atlanta legend Young Dose, this industry OG has been around since the mid 90’s but has always remained true to the music, despite what may have happened throughout the process of getting artists signed and managing their musical careers.

“Being a CEO, and being with the rappers, I really had developed the passion to do music too, but I really wasn’t focused on my music because I was trying to get my artists out there. Soa started doing that, being in the studio where I started doing music and setting myself up to become an artist also,” OG KV said.

While many rap fans are in the early years of their lives OG KV noted that some of Hip-Hop’s first and earliest fans are now in their 50’s an 60’s looking for something to listen to because they can’t relate to the new trapped out and auto-tuned generation of music.

“Everybody that’s 50 grew up they are hip hop babies, so it’s people that’s older that still love hip hop, but they can’t relate to the new young artists, so they’re like, ‘Put out your music.’ When I look at it and think about it from an artist standpoint, say like Aretha Franklin, James Brown was alive, they would still be doing music no matter how old they were. So even though I’m older now I’m still going to do my music because I still always had a passion for it,” OG KV said.  “So being older, I’m using the OG brand, the music that’s more like talking to the youngsters, just spitting game. Talking about the streets, the reality of being in the streets and what comes with it; both sides of it, not just the good.  Because many people just nowadays they just talk about the balling part, balling and stunting, and as we both it’s not all balling and stunting. Everybody is not balling and stunting. It’s more people going through the struggle, and that’s what my music is geared to. From my past and what I went through being incarcerated, just going through my trials and tribulations, and so a lot of people feel that.”

Thriving with an OG sound that pays homage to the legendary greats of Southern rap music OG KV brings everything full circle with this project.

“If it catches fire, hey, let’s do it, let’s go. You know, like I said, it wasn’t really about the money at this age because I done have everything. I had all the cars, beautiful women, the houses, travel, I’m seasoned, so it is not about getting the money and getting rich.  Of course, I would love for that to happen, but I just want to see what it’s going to do, see what it’s going to do, see what kind of impact I can make. Because like the cloth I’m cut from, like the UGK, MJG, the Scarface, the stuff I grew up on listening to.”

Rising Inglewood singer Griff Tyler is back with a surprise EP titled “While I Have Your Attn” for his supporters new and old who have helped catapult his career to new heights. Since the release of his critically acclaimed ‘Play Your Cards Right’ project back in November, Griff has received a modest amount of radio play on Power 106, Real 923 and Sirius XM’s Shade 45 station, been highlighted multiple times on No Jumper’s Mad LAtely podcast, and even been cast in a new premium cable series.

Today, he releases a three pack equipped with vibes to match the rising temperature as we transition from Spring to Summer in Southern California. The project features some new collaborators as A&G produced “Show Off”, and “Sign Me Up” is produced by Shawty.wav. However, Viper Beats who produced “Guarded” and “Wassup” on ‘Play Your Cards Right’ provided Griff with masterful production once again on “Forehead Kisses” creating yet another standout track together. Griff, being the talented songwriter he is, took the concept of the popular “booty rubs and forehead kisses” meme and created an incredible love song catered towards woman longing for affection. While he has your attention ladies, he wants to make babies and vacation plans with you.

Today Crown Heights rapper Bam Roc delivers his momentus new single titled, “Bloc Work.” Building upon his previous efforts since he was a kid rapping on blank tapes over HOT 97 instrumentals, this Brooklyn upstart gives fans bar after bar of lyrics to keep the listener locked in.

“I came across Axel Beats Summer of 2017-18 and I saw his beats had a large impact on drill music in Brooklyn, so I searched him up on YouTube where he had a variety of beats,” Bam Roc explained.  “It took me some time to find the right beat because I like to go off of a feeling and vibe when I write and create my work. I don’t like to force the music, to me when you do that it takes away from the authenticity, but once I found the right beat for my single Bloc Work I knew I had something.”

Remaining true to his upbringing in Brooklyn, Bam Roc has grown from a kid to a man through rap and you can hear it in his lyrics and sound.

“I’m from Crown Heights, Brooklyn born and raised, I love my neighborhood – there’s a lot of different cultures and races it’s a very diverse place.  We also have the big Caribbean parade also known as the Labor Day Carnival – the food is amazing.  Growing up I always had something to do, from jumping bike ramps, to playing man hunt, to seeing fights it was different but I wouldn’t change where I’m from for nothing. It taught me a lot growing up as a kid and now a man.”

Rapping since the age of 12 and watching my family The Ranjahz try their hand at the music industry, Bam Roc used to record over instrumentals as a kid but basketball was his dream through junior high and high school.  By the time Bam Roc turned 18 years old, he was taking the craft more seriously and released his first official remix to DJ Unk’s “Walk it out.

Teetering on the boundaries of multiple genres of music, Bam Roc describes his music as Hip-Hop, but a mixture of different cultures combined with Drill music to cater to the ears of his people in NYC today.

“My music is more Hip-Hop, but my style has a mixture of different cultures. I listen to a lot of Rock and Pop music as well from the early 2000’s and I also like to cater to the people’s ears. Drill music started for me in 2018 where I decided to switch it up a little bit and work on adding another style and flow to my arsenal,” Bam Roc explained. “Working on Drill music helped me channel my energy more when recording, giving off a different flare.  Knowing I can be lyrical I blended the drill with my Hip-Hop and I created my own style for people to listen to and gravitate towards”

Today H-Town artist Jimmy Bolt delivers the visual to his lively new track “YEX.”  Making a play on the word “sex” Jimmy has fun with his crew while “yexy” women bounce around a yacht and turn out a vacation in the tropics. Featuring “YEX” merchandise throughout, Jimmy Bolt proves why the spotlight is on him as he makes a run for next up in Houston’s competitive rap scene.

Yex is going crazy – it all started when my friends and I were joking around and started a dictionary of Y words. So like sex, we said change the sex to yex. So we just branded everything, we got the shirts, the hats, the socks and the condoms. I always have some bad females around me so it’s just a vibe. The yock star vibe, the girls, the cars, the money. Yock star lifestyle, might not make it,” he joked.

In the music video Jimmy Bolt lives up to his name as hiselectric personality and non-stop energy fly off the screen. One look at this video and it’s clear this 3rd Coast artist draws energy the music pulsating through his veins.

“For one, I draw energy from life and my passion and love for music itself, so I always try to translate that love to the songs and to the records. Lighting bolts and bolts that’s just that whole vibe, and it’s what fuels me to turn up as an artist,” Jimmy Bolt explained.  “But secondly my family, my pops, they are the ones that fully give me just that energy to keep going. Truthfully that’s why I have that get up and go get it mentality everyday – I stay ready. You never have to get ready if you always stay ready.”

Originally the visual started off as a behind the scenes vlog, but the episode became so epic during the filming Jimmy decided to turn the footage into an actual video. While the visual looks like it’s all fun and games, at one point during filming things got so crazy Jimmy Bolt had to keep the peace between dueling ladies fighting for camera time. Needless to say viewers are in for a mini royal rumble cat fight that takes this visual to new levels. And, although things got crazy in the tropics, no video vixens were harmed during the filming of this raucous music video.

“A few females had got into a little argument and the one girl just walked up to the other and hit her. I was like, ‘Hell naw’ because they were both bad, but I was like, ‘Yall ladies not gonna be fighting here!’ So I tried to break it up but one of them girls was strong as hell. They broke my Chrome Hearts frames, my glasses, I was pissed, things got crazy!”

Raised in a musical family, Jimmy Bolt is a natural when it comes to creating and visualizing the feel to his music and the industry has taken notice after his collaborations with Lil Keed, SSG Splurge and co-signs from OG Louie the XIII, Rubi Rose, Gunna, Lil Baby, Trippie Redd and more.

“Music was just something that I was always around and heard. My pops was in music, he was a band instructor, so I always heard all types of music from Jazz to Pop, to Rap to Rock. So I’ve always been around it and had an ear for it. Around four or five years ago I just started doing it, so it went up from there”

Coupled with a physique that includes a crazy workout each day, Jimmy Bolt has the music and look to back his growing fan base that’s spread outward from Houston and to the surrounding areas.

“We call our fans the Yang – not the gang – but Yang. It’s a whole fan club and the whole lit crowd of people that are always gonna tee-up and wear the merch and just catch the full vibe,” Jimmy Bolt said. “Get ready Yang, this is our year, we gonna drop this crazy shit and show y’all something that you’ve never seen before. Real life yock star ish, on Yod.”

Recently Columbus native and Ohio word spitter, Cap City Kid delivered his new projectIn Due Time.  Fans of the 26 year-old talent have been waiting patiently for this new release that shows this highly capable wordsmith in his best light, displaying maturity and growth in his music with each release.

Consolidated into five new songs for fans, In Due Time is a coming of age project that gives fans something to latch on to as Cap City Kid prepares to hit fans relentlessly with more music.

“It’s been a little bit since I released music, all 2019 I had done this thing where I was putting out a song a week. Just kind of because I could and because I was just trying to build my catalog.  Since then I’ve been working on a lot of music especially all of last year going to the top of this year. Really I got multiple albums worth of stuff, but I really just wanted to get a project out there,” Cap City Kid explained.

“This is just like a little appetizer almost because the rest of the year we have multiple projects planned, multiple releases, singles more like EPs and full length albums. I just wanted to get something out there, you know, that was a small, but like good compilation music. A couple of different sounds on there for people to digest and just kind of a set up for the rest of the year. I didn’t want to start too crazy with a full length album or anything. But I just wanted to come with some good music that I could preface the rest of the year with and reach out to the fans.”

Pieced together with producers from across the internet, Cap City Kid has been locked in with lesser known up-and-coming producers after having worked with big artists like DJ Mustard on more recent projects.

“Sometimes if a random producer sends me beats whether they got my email through social media or whatever, I’m always going through those and just listening because you never know what you’re going to find. I find music from the dopest and most obscure random places. So it was crazy. A lot of the producers that I worked with on this project are still on their own come-up just like I am, which honestly makes it even doper,” Cap City Kid said.

“Cause once this project prospers and we get it to the place we want to get it. It’s a win for both of us and advances us both further in our careers. So lately I’ve been working with smaller ones, man. I’ve gotten to work with big producers in the past. I’ve been fortunate to work with DJ mustard on my last project which was crazy. And obviously he’s a whole other level of super producer at this point in the rap game, but this was just something different and still very special without the big names.

Remaining true to the city that gave him his name, Cap City Kid is forever thankful to be able to draw fans from the adjacent Ohio State University and the community that surrounds him in Columbus.

“I always say it’s a blessing and a curse being in Columbus. I say it’s a blessing because there hasn’t been a major artist really yet to come out of Columbus, so there’s got to be someone that’s finally going to break through at some point. And why can’t it be me? And it’s also a curse because no one has broken out of Columbus. So there’s no like alpha that came out of the city, that people can follow that same path or you know, be a mentor throughout this journey,” Cap City Kid said.

“At the same time, it’s also a dope city because there’s a lot of young people – we got to OSU right down the street, you know, it’s one of the biggest campuses in the country and the world.  It’s absolutely nuts, so the resources are like everywhere, man, you got 80,000 students here and pretty much my target audience already as it is right now.  There’s a lot of dope venues in Columbus, there’s a lot to take advantage of and there’s also a lot of dope artists in Columbus that just like me, I feel like haven’t gotten the proper recognition. So I’m hoping this project sheds some light on the city.”
