2014 Australian Open Women’s singles champion Li Na was eliminated Tuesday in the Women’s Singles first round.
This is Li’s earliest tournament exit in 2014. She was defeated by Kristina Mladenovic from France in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 . Li’s elimination came a day after Stan Wawricka’s first round elimination. Wawricka won the 2014 Australian Open in the Men’s Singles category.
Li won the Aussie Open championship earlier this year when she defeated Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia in two sets, 7-6 and 6-0.
Li has been ranked the number two tennis player in singles since February.
Mladenovic on the other hand is ranked 36th in WTA singles. With the defeat of Li on Tuesday, Mladenovic scores her first victory on a top-five player. Her reaction after the upset over Li was priceless.
