Mega business mogul Russell Simmons gathered with other industry notables at the Together We Stand fundraiser held for the family of Eric Garner at Hudson Common in Manhattan. Pagesix.com reported the celebrity studded event, that focused on contributing toward the Garner family’s IndieGogo fund, was organized by Simmons, DJ Kiss, her husband DJ M.O.S, and Damon Peruzzi.

During the festivities the guests were surprised by the appearance of Garner’s widow, Esaw, and their children. It seemed only the organizers were privy to their coming to thank the contributors in person. Their unexpected arrival definitely added to the warm atmosphere of love that surrounded the rest of the evening. Receiving greetings from celebrity supporters such as Wesley Snipes, Estelle and Q-Tip didn’t overwhelm Garner’s widow as she calming addressed the reception stating “My husband’s death will not be in vain. I vow to my last dying breath to fight this to the end.”

Approximately 300 people were in attendance to help support her struggle for justice, having donated $20 each at the door towards the IndieGogo page named for the Garner children. The online fundraising page has received over $25,000 thus far as increased exposure of the Indie GoGo campaign continues.

The support of African-American celebrities in the nationwide protest to critical issues destroying our standard of living has continuously increased.  Earlier this week Russell Simmons took more direct action by meeting with New York state governor Cuomo over possible solutions for prison system reform. Financial contributions serve many purposes for the countless families left suffering the aftermath of tragedy. Fundraising initiatives can increase their effectiveness in healing these wounds by organizing their resources. Action on a corresponding plan for tangible businesses and institution development can also be contributed. Of course financial help is greatly appreciated but it’s only momentary relief or economic bandage.

Hopefully soon we can see a pool of economics from black celebrities contributing towards eliminating the cause of our systematic destruction rather than fundraisers ultimately supporting just the survival of the effects.
