Justin Bieber was the big winner at tonight’s American Music Awards. Not only did he pick up the award for favorite pop/rock male artist and artist of the year beating out stiff competition from Flo Rida, Pitbull, Usher, Rihanna, and Drake. He also took home the nights biggest award, artist of the year. Justin came to the AMA’s this year with his mother Pattie Mallette, after his widely reported split from former Disney star and girlfriend Selena Gomez.

“This is for all the haters who thought that maybe I was just here for one or two years, but I feel like I am going to be here for a very long time,” Bieber said on stage, dedicating his win to his mother.

Biber came ready to give a show tonight. While performing his hit song “As Long As You Love Me,” Biebs did Big Sean’s part. He turned up more later when he brought out Nicki Minja to perform her part from his latest hit “Beauty and A Beat.” He showed why he won best artist this year.

Bieber’s mentor Usher kicked off the night with an electric performance on a laser-filled stage, followed up by Carly Rae Jepsen singing hits including “Call Me Maybe,” while boy band The Wanted, who are up for favorite pop/rock group, donned suits to sing their latest, “I Found You.”

Taylor Swift had a good night too. She picked up the favorite female country artist award over Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. She thanked her fans in her acceptance speech, saying, “I’m really, really happy right now and that’s all because of you.”

Nicki Minaj grabbed the award for favorite rap/hip hop album of the year, with “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” over nominees Drake and newcomer rapper J. Cole.

The American Music Award nominees and winners are voted for by fans online, and the awards are handed out during a live three-hour broadcast featuring performances by artists.

The awards show, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, treated the audience to some of its greatest moments, including R&B star Beyonce performing “Single Ladies” at the 2008 show and a clip of Michael and Janet Jackson as children accepting an award in 1975.

R&B star Rihanna, 24, and rapper Nicki Minaj, 29, went into Sunday’s show leading with four nods each, battling each other in the favorite pop/rock female artist category.

Rihanna wasn’t expected to be at the awards show on Sunday, as she is in Berlin, midway through a seven-day tour across seven cities around the world promoting her upcoming “Unapologetic” album.

The race for new artist of the year was tight as well.  Newcomers One Direction, Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen, indie-pop band fun. and rapper J. Cole all competed, with Carly Rae coming away with the W.

The show ended the night with a performance from Psy performing “Gangham Style.” He stole the show when he brought out Hammer to bust a move with him!

Overall, the show was decent. Performances from Pink and Justin Bieber held up to their standards, while Christina Aguilera fell way short of hers. Stevie Wonder’s Dick Clark tribute was the highlight of the night by far. It was a good birthday for the AMA’s.

Rapper Pitbull is facing a censorship backlash overseas. The Miami-based hip hop star has released a video for his latest single “Don’t Stop the Party” that has been banned in the U.K. The clip won’t be airing on British television, after it was deemed too raunchy for young viewers.

It is being reported that there were more than 25 violations in the “Don’t Stop the Party” clip, which led to it being nixed from TV. In the video, Pitbull plays around with sexy models in pools and in bed in the video.

The song is the current single from his upcoming album Global Warming.

When Nicki Minaj touched down in Trinidad in October of 2010 for her much-anticipated homecoming dubbed The Localize Itt Concert, she created quite a stir —and this time it wasn’t for her outrageous wigs or mismatched body fitted ensembles.

It was, however, for her dirty mouth. An expletive here and there during her 40-minute performance of tracks from her successful Pink Friday debut album, did not escape the ears of an opposition politician, who wasn’t too pleased with the Young Money Entertainment rapper’s salty lyrics. And while he may have let the critically acclaimed singer get a pass for signing some boobs, Minaj’s state funded concert rivaled issues of escalating crime and corruption for weeks in the nation’s parliament.

Despite the controversy, Minaj, who recently released her newest album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, put Trinidad on the map in a big way. Her MTV News documentary, My Time Now, released shortly after her visit not only shed some light on her upbringing in Trinidad, it also turned the world’s attention to the island and re-ignited the nation’s drive to put soca on the world map.

Soca is indigenous to the island of steelpan and Calypso and many believe that it’s just a matter of time before its pulsating rhythms explode onto the international music scene…Hip Hop may just be the genre to help it get there. Soca artiste Kees Dieffenthaller had tongues yapping in February when word hit the streets that he had collaborated with Hip Hop superstar Snoop Dogg for the remix of his Carnival hit, Stress Away. After all it’s not every day that an artiste from the Caribbean gets a Grammy award-winning rapper to jump on a track, a soca track at that.

Soca pioneer Machel Montano achieved that feat in 2008, though, when he pulled out the big guns, teaming up with South rappers Lil Jon and Pitbull for the tune, Defense. The dynamic trio collaborated again a year later for a track called Floor on Fire. The rappers literally flattened the stage at every event they were scheduled to perform with the soca heavyweight and it seemed that the fusion of Hip Hop and Soca was catching on. But will the world embrace it?  It seems likely.

The world got a potent taste of Trinidad and soca in the 90s thanks to Anslem Douglas’ infectious hit, “Who Let the Dogs Out” which earned him a Grammy. The song became even more popular after the Bahamian music group, The Baha Men, put their spin on it and the title became a common catch phrase in America when it was used in the 2000 World Series between the Mets and Yankees.

Even Hip Hop mogul Jay-Z seemed to think the island had something special. Back in 2000, the rapper shot his popular Big Pimpin’ video in Trinidad during its Carnival celebrations. However, Jay-Z’s interest in Trinidad may not have been all about the music. Rumor has it the Girls Girls Girls singer fathered a son with a Trinidadian model nine years ago. The Hov has since denied those rumours. The only child he claims is his already famous daughter Blue Ivy with his superstar wife Beyonce Knowles.

Still, with international artistes now open to exploring different genres, whether a Soca and Hip Hop industry becomes a reality is left to be seen and heard. However, many believe that the movement is coming and coming fast.

Jasiel Robinson professionally known as Yung Joc Atlanta recording studio was recently robbed resulting in the loss of almost $70,000 worth of equipment. After the robbery, speculations started to surface that Yung Joc may have played a part in the alleged theft in hopes of getting insurance money. Yung Joc talked with WSB-TV and set the record straight that not only did he not have anything to do with the robbery, but that he also did not have insurance stating, “I’ve been seeing stories where people say this is about insurance fraud.  The truth is, I did not have insurance.  I was in the process of deciding who I wanted an insurance policy with.”

During the robbery, Yung Joc’s brother and his brother’s girlfriend were tied up and forced inside the studio at gunpoint while men stole TV’s and recording equipment. Joc also claims that hard drives containing music featuring Jazmine Sullivan, Pitbull and Lil Wayne were amongst the items stolen. In addition to his robbery claim, reports have also surfaced that the rapper has been experiencing some financial wows with a recent repossession of his wife’s Camaro and a eviction from his property. Could all this be a coincidence or is the once signed Bad Boy artist just experiencing a string of bad luck?

According to our sources close to the investigation, police are looking at all possibilities and they have not concluded that this was in fact a robbery.

Forbes magazine released their ‘Cash Kings’ 2011 list yesterday revealing hip hop’s top earners. Topping the list  are Jay-Z, Diddy, and Kanye West… why are we not surprised?

Fresh off of the digital release of Watch the Throne, I’m sure Jay is sitting on cloud 9 right now after being on the Forbes’ top hip hop earners list for the fourth time in the last five years and snagging the #1 spot for the third consecutive year, bringing in $37 million. Right behind him is the other Sean, Diddy that is, with $36 million.
