“Hip Hop only makes front page when it does something bad. Help them make front page for doing something good.” says Kangol Kid, member of pioneering Hip Hop group, UTFO. Kangol Kid and manager, Shaunda Lumpkin have teamed up to use the voice of Hip Hop to fight a disease that has probably affected someone you know: Breast Cancer.

Lumpkin’s mother, Gay Frances Gunn-Lucas fought the disease for almost three years before passing in 2010. Lumpkin and Kangol took action to save other mothers by starting the Mama Luke Movement, which is using Hip Hop’s power and influence to save lives.

In October 2010, the Mama Luke Movement hosted their first “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk in New Jersey which brought out Hip Hop greats like Roxanne Shante’, Dana Dane, Force MD’s and more. Other Hip Hop pioneers such as DMC of Run DMC, MC Lyte, Flavor Flav, Ice-T and Will Smith just to name a few, have endorsed the movement, and showed that they aren’t just talking the talk, but walking the walk as well. During the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk, supporters and volunteers rocked pink Mama Luke t-shirts, and one of the shirts began its’ infamous collection of Hip Hop signatures. The shirt has now been signed by over 40 Hip Hop greats and that’s just the beginning. Kangol and Shaunda are constantly working to get signatures from more of Hip Hop’s royalty, before the shirt goes up for auction in October.

HHE supports the movement and so should you! Check out more from the movement and how you can support on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/mamalukegfl.
