PHILADELPHIA / YEADON, Pa. — Police in Pennsylvania have charged a 34-year-old man after uncovering what authorities described as a scene “like a horror movie come to life,” involving the theft of roughly 100 full or partial sets of human remains from a historic cemetery straddling Philadelphia and Yeadon.
Prosecutors say Jonathan Christ Gerlach is accused of repeatedly breaking into mausoleums and underground vaults at Mount Moriah Cemetery, removing human remains and storing them in his home and a rented storage unit.
What Happened
According to investigators, Gerlach allegedly targeted the cemetery beginning in early November, breaking into at least 26 mausoleums and underground burial vaults. Authorities say sealed crypts were pried open and remains were taken from approximately 30 separate grave sites.
After weeks of reports from preservation groups about disturbed burial sites, detectives placed the cemetery under surveillance. Gerlach was allegedly stopped as he exited the grounds carrying a burlap bag and a crowbar. Prosecutors say the bag contained mummified remains of small children, several skulls, and other human bones.
What Police Found
A subsequent search of Gerlach’s residence in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, along with a rented storage unit, revealed a disturbing collection:
- More than 100 skulls
- Complete skeletons and loose bones
- Mummified hands and feet
- At least two decomposing torsos
Authorities say many of the remains were arranged or hanging in his basement.
Officials further revealed that the remains appear to span multiple centuries, ranging from very old bones to more recent remains. In one case, a body was reportedly found with a pacemaker still attached, indicating a relatively modern burial. Investigators also believe some of the remains belong to infants only months old.
Charges and Legal Status
Gerlach now faces hundreds of criminal counts, including:
- Theft
- Receiving stolen property
- Abuse of a corpse
- Institutional vandalism
- Desecration of venerated objects
He is currently being held on $1 million cash bail.
Investigators are still working to identify the victims, determine exactly which cemeteries the remains originated from, and notify surviving family members. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for later in January 2026.
About Mount Moriah Cemetery
Founded in 1855, Mount Moriah Cemetery is one of the region’s largest historic burial grounds, spanning roughly 160 acres and holding an estimated 150,000 burials. Over the years, the cemetery has struggled with neglect, limited funding, and security gaps, making it vulnerable to vandalism and illegal activity.
Local preservation groups that help maintain the grounds were the first to alert authorities after discovering multiple newly damaged vaults and mausoleums, triggering the investigation that ultimately led to Gerlach’s arrest.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement officials say the investigation remains active and complex, as they attempt to catalog the remains, restore dignity to the deceased, and return them to their proper resting places.
This is a developing story. Hip Hop Enquirer will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
