Phil Jackson was ready to accept an offer today if one was made. One was made, it just wasn’t to him. Mike D’Antoni, former head coach of the Phoenix Suns and the New York Knicks accepted the job as head coach of the Lakers late last night.

D’Antoni signed a 3 year contract for 12 million dollars. The 61-year-old D’Antoni underwent knee replacement surgery earlier this month,  and could be physically limited early his tenure. Black said the Lakers aren’t  certain when D’Antoni will travel to Los Angeles to begin work.

D’Antoni coached current Laker Steve Nash for years when he was head coach of the Phoenix Suns. Nash was league MVP 2 years in a row under D’Antoni. They also won at least 54 games a year together. His time with the Knicks wasn’t so stellar. He had problems guiding a team that consisted of Carmello Anthony and Amare Stoudamire. He brought them to only one playoff appearance, and no wins in the postseason.

He should be a good fit for the Lakers. The Lakeshow was more interested in installing a fast paced offense and that’s what D’Antoni is known for. What also is for sure is that the Lakers have a new coach. Now it’s time to win.
