Around 5 pm yesterday (February 1), a student was shot on Morehouse College’s campus in Atlanta, Georgia. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution and tweets from the Morehouse College Student Government Association, the student (whose name has not been released) was shot in front of the school’s gymnasium, Archer Hall, after a pick-up game of basketball. The student was shot in the forearm and rushed to nearby Grady Memorial Hospital where it was reported that he was in stable condition and did not receive any life-threatening injuries.
According to the Atlanta University Center police, two men were involved in shooting the victim after they got into an argument in front of the building. The names of the suspects have also not been released yet, but reports are claiming that the alleged shooters were not students of Morehouse, but instead attended another Atlanta University Center school. The Atlanta University Center is made up of Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse School of Medicine and the International Theological Center.
According to Morehouse spokeperson, Elise Durham, “police believe there are two suspects, and they are believed to be students of the Atlanta University Center, but have not yet been identified”.
Morehouse Chief of Police, Vernon Worthy said “One student brandished a weapon, a victim who happens to be a Morehouse student, just got to the inside before four shots were fired”.
“It does upset me, we are supposed to represent something more than arguing over petty stuff like that and for it to get that far to shoot someone else over an argument over a basketball call, it is unacceptable,” Keon Daniels, a freshman at Morehouse, said.
The Morehouse vs. Clark Atlanta University game which was scheduled for today, February 2 has currently been cancelled. Morehouse College President John Silvanus Wilson Jr. will be gathering with students and faculty today at 3 p.m. for a “Call to Action On Campus Safety” at King’s International Chapel on the school’s campus.
This is the second shooting on a school’s campus in Atlanta within the past few days, following a shooting at Price Middle School where a 14 year old student was allegedly shot by a classmate.
HHE will continue to keep you posted as more information on the shooting is released.
