With the draft only a week away it seems if Houston’s decision on who they will take with the first pick is still up in the air.
There is much speculation of South Carolina stud defensive end Jadeveon Clowney being selected number one overall by the Texans.
Clowney is on the top of most draft analysts mock draft boards including Mel Kiper and Todd McShay of ESPN and Pat Kirwan of NFL Network.
The question is how would Clowney fit into Houston’s 3-4 defensive scheme? Well he could be used as a hybrid defensive player like a Elvis Dumervil during his days with Denver or even how 2006 top draft pick Mario Williams was used during his stint with the Texans. Clowney could provide a spark for that defense whether it be at linebacker or defensive end alongside Pro Bowlers J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing. Plus the Texans could use another solid pass rusher to come after Andrew Luck in that AFC South division.
This would be an ideal situation. But there is a problem.
Houston’s primary area of concern that needs to be addressed is the starting quarterback position.
With Johnny Manziel being the hot commodity at the quarterback position and after a phenomenal college career has many people such as myself scratching our heads and wondering why Manziel is not on top of these mock draft boards.
After all Johnny Football had an impressive showing at Texas A&M’s Pro Day at the end of March. Manziel lit it up at the Pro Day by completing 61 of his 64 passes that he has thrown. Therefore, Manziel clearly has the accuracy that can translate to the NFL. An added bonus is his ability to scramble out of the pocket.
Manziel should be the number one pick in the draft by Houston. Especially considering that Houston’s defense already have studs like Watt and Cushing. If there is to be any restructuring to their defense it should be addressed in free agency. Houston should take advantage of this opportunity to draft a quality quarterback which is their number one area that needs to be addressed after losing Matt Schaub in the offseason.
