Hollywood Reporter revels that screenwriter John Ridley , 12 Years a Slave, is set to direct a film that detail Rodney King and the Los Angeles riots. that proceeded the acquittal of four L.A.P.D. officers, who were videotaped beating King close to death.
This would be Ridley’s first film as a director but he is the creator of the television show American Crime. The film is currently untitled and is being produced by Broad Green and Imagine Entertainment. The founders of Broad Green Gabriel and Daniel Hammond said:
This is a seminal event in our country’s history, the reverberations of which are still far too relevant today. We were blown away by John’s amazing screenplay and we know that under his direction and the aegis of Imagine, the film will be truly incredible. This is why we started this company. To make movies like this.
This is sure to be a film that will depict that reality of police brutality in a fascinating way. The Rodney King beating was America’s first glimpse into this sad state that many minorities are forced to encounter, and showing how the justice system has some major flaws. Since Rodney King, the list of police recording have grown exponentially due to technological advances but sadly the issues within criminal justice still seem to remain the same.
