Tune-in to “Steve Harvey” on Wednesday, October 21 as Steve honors MC LYTE, the first female solo rapper in history, as a Female Groundbreaker! You won’t want to miss the heartwarming moment when MC Lyte grants a $50,000 scholarship to 19 year old Courtney Rhodes of San Antonio, TX, to attend Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. The scholarship was granted through the Hip Hop Sisters Foundation and their #EducateOurMen initiative. Cortney is a graduate of Steve Harvey’s Mentoring Camp.

MC Lyte started rapping at the age of 12 and recorded her first song at 16. Her first album, Lyte As A Rock, was released when she was just 18 and was the first-ever full length album by a female rapper. She became the first female rapper ever to be nominated for a Grammy. This year, MC Lyte will drop her first album in 12 years, called Legend.

On Wednesday’s episode of “Steve Harvey,” MC Lyte will reminisce about her start in the music industry, including a story about being on tour with Heavy D.

MC Lyte has always been a big advocate for education and currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Dillard University in New Orleans. Tune-in to hear how MC Lyte’s mom used to make her write essays, as a way to ask for permission for nearly everything she did – including going to hip hop clubs and even to the studio.
