Chandler Fashion Center Mall
CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Chandler Fashion Center has been shut down after a robbery suspect and a police officer exchanged gunfire. The suspect, Daniel Perez, is inside the mall, police said.
The mall at Loop 101 and West Chandler Boulevard has been evacuated and is on lockdown.
Police said Perez is a suspect in an armed robbery in Casa Grande. Undercover police exchanged gunfire with Perez outside of the shopping center before he ran into the Sears in the mall.
There were no injuries reported. Perez had been mistakenly released from jail in mid-December.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said at the time that it had never received the charging paperwork for 25-year-old Perez, and he bonded out on $320 after being booked Dec. 16 on a misdemeanor warrant.
Perez is accused of shooting at Arizona Department of Public Safety officers on Dec. 10 outside a home in Casa Grande. Officers went to the house to follow up on an unspecified investigation.
Perez was injured by gunfire, admitted to a Phoenix hospital for treatment and held in a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail ward before being turned over to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
But Pinal County authorities said they weren’t notified of the aggravated assault warrant on Perez until Dec. 23 — a week after he was released from custody.
