Tragedy has hit the state of Texas once again, a gunman walked into a small Baptist church in rural Texas on Sunday and opened fire, killing at least 25 people.

Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas confirmed the death toll, which has steadily increased throughout the day after the shooting at the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs.

Albert Gamez Jr., another Wilson County commissioner, told CNN that he was told by an emergency medical technician that 27 people were dead and 24 others were injured. He said he was told by the police that the gunman was chased into the next county and was killed, but it was not clear whether the police shot him or he killed himself.

Mr. Gamez said the victims were still inside the church. Sutherland Springs is a small community where everyone knows one another, he said. “You never expect something like this. My heart is broken.”

The unincorporated community has a population that numbers in the low hundreds — the 2000 census was 362, according to the Texas State Historical Association. The preliminary death toll would amount to about 7 percent of the population. 

Megan Posey, a spokeswoman for Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, Tex., said that she did not know exactly how many patients the hospital had received, but that it was continuing to receive more.

The hospital has activated its emergency response team, she said. Information about the conditions of patients was not immediately available.

Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas said on Twitter: “Our prayers are with all who were harmed by this evil act. Our thanks to law enforcement for their response.”

Ken Paxton, the attorney general of Texas, said in a statement: “The thoughts and prayers of all Texans are with the people of Sutherland Springs as tragic reports come out of First Baptist Church. My office stands ready to assist local law enforcement as needed.”

On Facebook, a user described the church: “It is such a warm and welcoming church that is truly filled with the Holy Spirit and shows real Christian love and friendship.”

Famed actor Lou Diamond Phillips was arrested Friday morning for a DWI while driving in Portland. TMZ reports Phillips was driving in Portland, pulled up to a police officer and asked how to get to where he wanted to go. The cop immediately concluded Phillips was hammered and had him take a field sobriety test, which he flunked.

The actor was cuffed and taken to the station, where he blew a .20 … 2 1/2 times the legal limit.

He’s currently being held in jail.

Rap star Fetty Wap aka Willie Maxwell is in hot water after being arrested for driving drunk while drag racing on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn on Friday morning, authorities said.

Fetty Wap was behind the wheel of a black 2012 Mercedes CLS AMG when police stopped him around 1:20 a.m. near Hamilton Avenue, an NYPD spokeswoman said. He is also charged with driving on a suspended license.

Wap’s blood alcohol content was above New York’s legal limit of .08. He was driving 100 mph on a stretch of road where the speed limit is 50 mph.

The 26-year-old rap star  was charged with reckless endangerment, illegal speed contest, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle as well as multiple motor vehicle violations such as making an unsafe lane change and following too closely.

This isn’t the first time Fetty Wap has been in some heat. It wasn’t long ago that Wap was in the middle of a feud in Paterson, N.Y. that erupted in gunfire,  leaving three people injured.

We hope Fetty Wap gets his act together and get back to making music.

Brianna Brochu, a white college student was arrested for harassing her black college roommate Chennel “Jazzy” Rowe and bragging about it on social media.  Brochu faces disciplinary action from the school after she bragged about “finally getting rid of her roommate, whom she referred to as “Jamaican Barbie.”

Brochu, a freshman at the University of Hartford, posted on Instagram about rubbing used tampons on Rowe’s backpack, spitting in her coconut oil, pouring moldy clam dip in her lotion and inserting Rowe’s toothbrush inside her rectum.

Rowe said she decided to move out when Brochu came into their room while she was studying and turned off the lights.

After moving out, Rowe said she discovered the Facebook and Instagram posts detailing the level of harassment she endured.

Keith Wilder lead singer of the ’70s funk band Heatwave has died at the age of 65.

Wilder had been suffering from serious health problems recently and died in his sleep Sunday, according to his cousin and bandmate, Billy Jones.

Wilder’s had several massive hits, including “Always and Forever,” “Boogie Nights” and “The Groove Line.”
