Police Shooting of a Minneapolis Man Sparks Outrage Against Many

Many individuals have taken to the streets of downtown Minneapolis in order to protest the police killing of yet another Black man.

22-year-old, Amir Locke, was sleeping on the couch early Wednesday morning, February 2, when police conducted a “no-knock” search warrant, according to The Guardian. This allows police to enter private property without first alerting or announcing their presence to the occupants. This particular warrant was in relation to a homicide investigation led by detectives from the nearby Saint Paul Police Department. However, Locke was not named in the warrant and was not a suspect in the case being investigated. A lawyer from Locke’s family has since stated that he was in the apartment staying with his cousin. Minneapolis police have even acknowledged that it was unclear whether or not he was connected to that particular investigation.

Police body cam footage shows officers entering into the apartment, announcing their presence only after they are inside. An officer can be seen kicking the couch Locke was sleeping on, screaming at him to wake up. Wrapped in a blanket and seemingly confused, Locke can be seen moving around where a handgun becomes visible. Moments later, the officer who has now been identified as Mark Hanneman fired three fatal shots, killing Locke who was still wrapped up in his blanket.

Hundreds of protestors gathered together at Government Plaza on Saturday to express their dismay and demand racial justice, stating that Locke had a right to possess a weapon in his own home and was not even given a chance by officers to disarm himself. Citizens gathered together in below-freezing temperatures to show their support and state their demands which included: the resignation of the mayor and police chief, the arrest of officers involved and a ban on no-knock warrants. Mayor Jacob Frey eventually made the decision to put a temporary ban on no-knock search warrants, adding that he wanted to ensure the safety of both the public and officers.

Since the tragic incident, Hanneman has been placed on paid leave just as many other officers before him who have been accused of unlawful killings of citizens.

This is not the first time that Minneapolis police officers have come under fire for cases such as this. Earlier in 2020, George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, was killed by ex-officer, Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest where authorities suspected him of trying to pass a counterfeit $20 bill. As far as no-knock killings, Breonna Taylor was killed in March of 2020 when Louisville police officers raided her apartment, looking for two people suspected of selling drugs, neither of whom were Taylor. Officers fired more than 20 rounds into the apartment, with Taylor being shot at least eight times.

Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill, who signed the no-knock warrant that led to the killing of Locke, even presided over the trial of ex police officer, Derek Chauvin, according to several Minnesota outlets.

Many are left outraged as racial injustices such as these happen far too often at the hand of police who have sworn to protect and serve our communities. The family of Amir Locke is being represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has previously worked with other families of police shooting victims such as the family of George Floyd.

Whoopi Goldberg’s Suspension From The View Raises Questions of Cancel Culture

Earlier this week on Monday, January 31, The View cohost, Whoopi Goldberg was suspended for remarks she made concerning the Holocaust. 

The show’s hosts were discussing the recent decision of a Tennessee school to ban the 1980 book Maus which is a graphic novel by cartoonist Art Spiegelman that depicts Spiegelman interviewing his father about his experiences as a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor. 

During the discussion, Goldberg made claims that the Holocaust “was not about race,”  but instead about “man’s inhumanity to man” and involved “two white groups of people. This sparked outrage amongst some viewers, causing Goldberg to be suspended from the show for two weeks on Tuesday, Feb. 1. 

ABC News President, Kim Godwin, said Goldberg was asked “to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments” throughout her suspension. This comes after Goldberg served as a special guest on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert and further explained the comments she made earlier in the day, where she eventually issued an apology on Twitter. 

During the next day’s showing of The View, Goldberg even apologized for her comments, stating that she had made a poor choice of words. However, her apologies were not enough for some causing her to be suspended from the show. 

Goldberg’s removal from the program has since drawn some critics who say the network’s decision to suspend the cohost was too rash and a missed learning opportunity for the network, as the Holocaust is a sensitive topic that is rarely discussed on air. This situation has sparked a “cancel culture” frenzy spurring strong emotions on both sides of the argument as to whether the liberal actor should be canceled or corrected about her comments. 

Previous public figures who have come under fire for their comments concerning Jewish people include actor Nick Cannon who was fired from his MTV show Wild ’N Out by the program’s parent company ViacomCBS for comments they said “promoted hateful speech.” 

In the episode of Cannon’s Class, the 41-year-old host interviewed former Public Enemy rapper Professor Griff who left the rap group in 1989 after claiming that Jewish people were “wicked.” Professor Griff then went on to state that he was talking about the Jewish people controlling the media and said “I’m hated now because I told the truth,” where Cannon agreed with him and even stated that “Semitic people are black people”, and that: “You can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people.” 

The question of the harshness of cancel culture quickly arises in Goldberg’s scenario as well as many others. 

Editor of Jewcy, and online platform for young Jews, Isaac de Castro, took to Twitter to say that Goldberg’s comments reflected the inability of many Americans to understand race and racism outside of their prism, but also added “putting a grown woman in a time-out” does little to advance a reckoning with Jewish identity.

In recent times it appears as though the rules seem to be more enforced when it comes to Black public figures versus their non Black counterparts. In 2015 Kelly Osbourne said on an episode of The View about then presidential candidate Donald Trump, “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?” Osborne questioned. 

Other cohost of the show which included Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie Perez, Michelle Collins and Raven-Symoné can be heard disagreeing with Osborne, where she later began to backtrack her comments. 

Perez even corrected Osbourne saying, “Latinos are not the only people that do that.” 

Osbourne later apologized, however no dramatic action was taken against her such as removing her from the show.

Giuliana Rancic was reprimanded back in 2015 for her stereotypical comments on the hit show Fashion Police where she stated that actor Zenday’s dreadlocked hair looked like it “smells like patchouli oil and weed.”

Rancic later apologized, however was not faced with removal from the show. Beauty moguls such as Jeffree Star have even made a multitude of racist remarks as well as had problematic instances and yet still seem to be mostly unaffected by cancel culture. 

However, stars like Roseanne Barr have faced the consequences of their ignorant, racist comments, by having their shows cancelled. The discussion of cancelling individuals rather than educating them becomes a problem when the person who made the offensive comments has apologized and is willing to learn from their mistake, just as Goldberg has done.

With the spread of the Omicron virus that has made its way to America, NY Governor Kathy Hochul has taken measures to make it a state crime to make or produce fraudulent vaccination cards. This comes as as high-ranking NYPD cops have been caught doing just that.

This newest legislation that is intended to combat the spread of the virus was signed into law on Wednesday which included other pandemic-response related measures, makes the falsification of such documents a class A misdemeanor. The Feds have already made such related type of crimes a felony.

The new law also makes it a felony to access a computer to tamper with COVID-19 records so yes hacking into digital records or accessing them for the purpose of committing a crime is punishable by a prison sentence in New York State.

“We need to make sure we learn the lessons of the pandemic so we don’t make the same mistakes twice,” Hochul said in a statement after signing the bills. “These new laws will help us improve our response to the pandemic now, crack down on fraudulent use of vaccination records, and help us better understand the areas of improvement we need to make to our health care system so we can be even more prepared down the road.”

Earlier this month, there were reports that EMS employees were selling fake vaccination cards to city workers after Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a mandate requiring all city employees to be vaccinated as a condition of keeping their jobs.

A police lieutenant and captain was stripped of their badges and guns and placed on desk duty after someone snitched on them for using bogus vaccination cards. Prior to that discovery, Police commissioner Shea told reporters in a statement that he knew of “zero’ evidence of cops committing these types of crimes. Those cops have been identified as Lt. Joseph Marsella and Capt. Desmond Morales. They both are currently under investigation by NYPD’s internal affairs.

After accepting responsibility for federal payroll tax evasion, Shanga Hankerson, the son of legendary superstar Gladys Knight has agreed to a 2-year plea deal for not paying the government their monies. At the time of his arrest, Hankerson had owed the government in excess of 1 million dollars in back taxes and feds decided to close down all three of his restaurants that bare his famous mother’s name.

 “Hankerson willfully disregarded his tax obligations for many years,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Kurt R. Erskine.  “Payroll taxes fund social insurance programs, including Social Security and Medicare, and are a large source of revenue for the federal government.  Employers who fail to comply with their legal obligations will be held accountable.”

          “While ownership of a well-known restaurant in our community has its perks, it also comes with great responsibility,” said IRS Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge James E. Dorsey. “Paying taxes is a way to give back to the community, but unfortunately Hankerson chose to use those funds for other means.  This sentencing emphasizes that all employers, big and small, have equal responsibility to collect, report, and pay over their payroll taxes.”

          According to Acting U.S. Attorney Erskine, the charges and other information presented in court: In 1997, Hankerson opened his first restaurant, Gladys Knight’s Chicken and Waffles, in Atlanta.  Over the next several years, Hankerson expanded the concept to at least three other locations in northern Georgia and Washington, D.C.  Hankerson was the sole owner of the businesses that operated the restaurants.

          As an employer, Hankerson’s companies were required to withhold from employees’ gross pay Federal Insurance Contributions Act (“FICA”) taxes, which represent Social Security and Medicare taxes, and federal income taxes.  Collectively, these withheld taxes are referred to as “payroll taxes.”  Specifically, employers are required to file, one month after the conclusion of the calendar quarter, an Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return, setting forth the amount of payroll taxes due. 

          An individual is responsible for collecting, accounting for, and paying over the payroll taxes if he or she has the authority required to exercise significant control over the employer’s financial affairs.  As the sole owner, Hankerson was the responsible person, and he had the responsibility to collect, truthfully account for, and pay over payroll taxes due.  From at least 2012 to 2016, Hankerson failed to fully remit over $1 million in payroll taxes due.  

          Shanga Hankerson, 45, of Atlanta, Georgia, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael L. Brown to serve two years in prison, one year of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution of $1,039,310.65.  Hankerson was convicted on July 21, 2021, after he pleaded guilty.

Many had thought the singer herself owned the restaurant but it was later revealed during a lawsuit where she sued her son to remove her name off of all business records as she was only the pitch person for his brand. Former employees later told federal investigators that Hankerson used the money to pay for wild sex parties and illicit drugs.

After R & B superstar R. Kelly was convicted last month on federal sex racketeering charges, his supporters have been crying foul ever since and today many of them are planning to converge on his former Johns Creek home in the suburbs of Atlanta to show their support for the fallen singer.

Arthur D. Alston III professionally known as Choke The Joke, a former Rocafella Records Video Director and Real Housewives of Atlanta producer and social media influencer is spearheading the peaceful protest to bring more attention to what he and many others believes was a wrongful conviction. Choke’s goal is to bring more attention to the 1907 Mann Act that is viewed as a racist law that has been used in the past to prosecute men of color for dating white women.

Congress passes the Mann Act, which was ostensibly aimed at keeping young women from being lured into prostitution, but really offered a way to make a crime out of many kinds of consensual sexual activity.

The influencer was appointed by a cadre of Robert Sylvester Kelly’s supporters to expose some of the problems that lead up to the government convicting the singer on 9 felony counts which includes the discrepancies in witness testimony during the trial and how the Surviving R. Kelly documentary was laced in falsehoods that provided a platform for some whose sole purpose was to financially benefit from the singer’s name. From 3p-6pm today, hundreds of supporters is expected to converge on R. Kelly’s former neighborhood located in the 400 block of Old Homestead Trail, Johns Creek. According to Choke, the current owner of the home has no issue with their presence as long as they do not get on the property.

This is the 11th Annual Atlanta Hip Hop Day as well as The Bet Hip Hop Awards with stars already descending on the city.

Saturday, at noon, artists, vendors and hip hop fans are planning to attend the 2-day event of ATL Hip Hop Day which begins at noon at the Woodruff Wilson Park in downtown Atlanta on Peachtree Street.

Atlanta Hip Hop Day is an outdoor Hip Hop festival founded in 2011 and designed to pay homage to the elements of Hip Hop, Hip Hop History and Atlanta’s contribution to the Hip Hop culture.

This year marks 11 years of bringing out artists and legends from all spectrums of Hip Hop like TI, Killer Mike, Raheem The Dream, Trae Tha Truth, Kilo Ali, Kool DJ Red Alert, Fabo, OJ Da Juiceman, Young Dro, Skooly and of course DJ Scream and many more.

Actor Michael K. Williams Lived A Life of Fame While Struggling with Addiction

Sadly, we have lost another member of the culture due to apparent substance abuse. Michael K. Williams, best known for his role as “Omar” on The Wire died at his Brooklyn apartment at the age of 54.

Williams spoke about his substance abuse as he rose to stardom and admitted that he was surprised that he was still alive.

Williams said in a 2012 interview that he would retreat to Newark, NJ during breaks in his shooting to obtain cocaine and weed. “I was playing with fire” Williams said at the time. It was a matter of time before I got caught and my business ended up on the cover of a tabloid or I went to jail or worse ended up in a body bag.”

Actor Wendell Pierce who played alongside Williams in The Wire shared beautiful memories of his friend. — The death of my love for this brother, can only be matched by the depth of my pain learning of his loss.” Pierce goes on to say that his friend was an “immensely talented man with the ability to give voice to the human condition portraying the lives of those who humanity is seldom elevated until he sings their truth.”

Gregg Leakes, the husband of reality TV star NeNe Leakes, has died.

The 66-year-old entrepreneur, who was a regular cast member on Real housewives of Atlanta alongside his wife Nene Leakes has died due to his battle with colon cancer while at home surrounded by his friends and family.

This past Saturday, Nene Leakes told guests at her Duluth restaurant The Linnethia that her husband was transitioning to the other side.

“Today the Leakes family is in deep pain with a broken heart. After a long battle with cancer, Gregg Leakes has passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by all of his children, very close loved ones and wife Nene Leakes,” A family friend said in a statement sent to Hip Hop Enquirer.

Fans watched the couple for almost a decade on the popular reality show Real housewives of Atlanta go through the ups and downs of a family raising a son while managing their various business endeavors.

Rapper DaBaby went from performing at the BET Awards to being booted from one of the biggest festivals in the world all because of his ridiculous homophobic remarks during a recent concert.

The organizers announced within the past few hours that his services will no longer be needed because they have decided to replace his spot with rapper Young Thug.

According to TMZ, the following statement was released by the concert producers:

DaBaby was supposed to perform at 9 PM Sunday for more than 150,000 fans, as the final act of the 4-day festival — instead, he’ll be sidelined, and Young Thug has been moved up into that slot.

The 11th-hour change is in response to the rapper’s onstage rant last weekend at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami. ICYMI … DaBaby told the audience to put their phones up, “If you didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS or other STDs that’ll make you die in 2-3 weeks” and “Fellas, if you didn’t suck a n***a d**k in the parking lot.”

There is apparently a campaign making its rounds on social media to #CancelDaBaby and seeing that he was just dropped as a pitchman for Boohoo clothing and removed as a featured artist on the song “Levitating” after artist Due Lipa denounced his comments.

Singer Chris Brown even chimed in via his instagram stories with the following message:

Brown was one of many who have called out the rapper and while a few have defended DaBaby, the consensus at this point is that he has been canceled by many.
