Meet Grover Norquist…The Man Holding America Hostage!

Grover Norquist Tax Pledge
Grover Norquist

Author: Sylvia Burley

If you want to know why Republicans are refusing to budge on the “no new taxes” mantra, look no further than the Grover Norquist tax pledge.

Norquist is a conservative activist and President of Americans for Tax Reform, an advocacy and tax payer group whose stated goal is “a system in which taxes are simpler, flatter, more visible, and lower than they are today”.  They also state that “the government’s power to control one’s life derives from its power to tax.  We believe that power should be minimized.”

Americans for Tax Reform is best known for its “Taxpayer Protection Pledge”, which asks candidates for federal and state office to commit themselves in writing to oppose all tax increases…forever and ever…regardless of the current economic climate.

This pledge is the reason Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate, as well as the recent congressional “super-committee”, have not been able to come together to do what’s best in addressing this country’s debt crisis.  In addition, seventy-one members of the House have signed a letter to the committee demanding that the deficit be cut without any tax increases despite the fact that the only way to successfully address the current deficit is through spending cuts AND revenue generation (aka tax increases).

According to an Op-ed piece in The New York Times, He (Norquist) has repeatedly told Republicans they will risk his wrath if they agree to any new tax revenue to lower the deficit, and that threat, according to several members of Congress, has been one of the main forces preventing any real progress on the panel.”  This hardly seems fair when Democrats have been willing to risk their political capital by offering up cuts on programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Sen. John Kerry(D-MA) said on MSNBC, “I have demonstrations outside my office.  I’ve had rallies.  I’ve had (an) unbelievable amount of pushback because we were ready and prepared to put on the table some of those so-called sacred cows.”  Republicans, he said, refused to consider cancellation of the tax cuts for the wealthy.

How are Republicans able to negotiate in good faith?  The answer is they can’t because Republicans are, in effect, being held hostage by Norquist and have been for years now.  Any Republican who refuses to sign and adhere  to the pledge will find themselves running against a well-funded Norquist candidate, even if they signed it 18 years ago when the country was a much different place.

A recent 60 Minutes episode that aired on November 20, 2011 claimed that “Norquist has been responsible, more than anyone else, for rewriting the dogma of the Republican Party”. This rings true seeing that he was on the Republican Platform Committees in 1998, 1992 and 1996, helping his party swing even more to the right; helped draft the Contract with America, which helped the Republicans take over the House; helped secure early support for George W. Bush’s presidential bid, and campaigned in 2000 and 2004 to help him win the White House” (and we all know how badly George W. Bush in the White House turned out…unnecessary war…millions of lives lost here and abroad…unpaid for tax cuts and programs….all resulting in trillions of dollars being spent which Republicans always seem to conveniently forget when talking about the current debt).

There are one or two courageous Republicans.  Kevin Yoder (R-KS), a fiscal conservative, has never signed Norquist’s pledge.  “My responsibility lies to my constituents,” said Yoder adding, “I can’t forsee every scenario”.

During the interview, Norquist also stated that he came up with the idea to “brand” the Republican Party as the “no new tax” party when he was 12 years old, so basically we are ALL being held hostage because of the bright idea of a prepubescent teen.

The good news is many Republicans now want to get out from under this man’s dogged control.  I just hope for this country’s sake, the majority of them find the courage to do so.

Album Review: Yelawolf – Radioactive

1

Lyrics B+ Beats B+ Flow A- Originality A- Overall Grade B+

The past couple of years have been busy for Gadsden, Alabama’s only white rapper.  In late 2009, with the release of his critically acclaimed mixtape Trunk Muzik, Yelawolf created a buzz that raised eyebrows in the industry. First came the request for features, then a few cameos in some videos, finally there was the cypher at the BET awards. Yela cemented his name as one of the artists to be watched in 2010. Wasting no time, Shady Records CEO/Interscope records exec Eminem snatched Yelawolf as soon as he could.  2011 was his busiest year yet, opening for Wiz Khalifa on his Wake & Bake Tour while recording his debut album Radioactive ending the year on a good note.

Many were wondering which direction Yelawolf was going to go in for his first mainstream album release. To the benefit of his fans, he stayed at home with his country roots while flirting with original production from WiLLPower.  The intro, “Radioactive”, begins with a simulated warning about Nuclear Bombs launched from North Korea that will hit New York, Orlando, and Las Vegas (all of which are locations where he recorded).  The beat sounds like the listener is in the lab featured on the cover, watching Yelawolf cook up the rest of the album. On “Get Away” the album begins to roll simultaneously with the flows of  Yelawollf , Shawty Fatt and surprisingly Mystikal.  Yela’s chorus, assisted by high pitched chords are relaxing, while fitting his Alabama style at the same time. The features on Radioactive might come off as random but the fact is, only a handful of rappers can flow with Yelawolf bar for bar.  The majority of the first few tracks need  play from a respectable sound system to fully gain a perspective of how the album sounds; “Hard White” ft Lil Jon  and “Lets Roll” ft. Kid Rock.

Radioactive takes a more provocative turn as the listener arrives at “Throw It Up”  featuring Gangsta Boo and Eminem. The best flow on the track is up for debate, while the production has the southern bass line/piano combo allowing all of the artists to rip it in their own respective way. Although skits come as a privilege for listeners on albums these days,  Eminem and Yela put on a show at the end of their collab as Em sarcastically persuades Yela to make a love song for women. Funny. On “Animal” the production by Diplo follows the dub-step wave that rappers such as Kanye West (Watch The Throne) are using. This track reveals the ultimate potential of Yelawolf’s flow as he hits syllables on every hi hat while FeFe Dobson’s chorus meshes with the beat perfectly. On “Everything I Love the Most”, Yelawolf identifies with the listener by questioning why everything he loves the most is so wrong for him.  Although this topic is  common among most people, Yelawolf relates it to the concept that fans “don’t want rappers to lie but they don’t want the truth”.

After a few listens Radioactive fits Yelawolf perfectly.  The Majority of fans figure since he’s from the south his whole album would be ignorant but there are a wide variety of topics and themes. That’s a good thing in terms of Yela’s future, it shows he’s a professional musician  with room to grow. The singles released are perfect for the club and radio yet there are some hidden gems on Radioactive.  There aren’t any songs of the year nominees but the album is good enough to earn album of the year nods from mainstream critics. Its rare to find such an original style blended with high quality production, lyrics, and flow on a debut album. Radioactive is available in stores and on Itunes on November 22, 2011.

Supreme x The North Face

Words can’t even begin to describe how head-over-heels I am about this coat! Supreme teamed up with The North Face to create this one of a kind “Nuptse” down jacket.

Splashed with leopard print the jacket is a dope alternative to normal winter outerwear. The jacket which comes in two other colors (pictures below) is set to be released this Friday (black Friday of all days) in the United States and the 26th (Saturday) in Japan. So even if you’ve already prepared your black Friday holiday shopping list, you may want to make room on there to cop this item! A clean pair of Timberlands, black or dark blue denim jeans would set your look off proper!

N*ggas in Paris… Swizz Beatz and John Wall!!!

0
Swizz Betaz in Paris

Swizz Beatz was on hand to host the “Reethym of Life” party at the VIP Room nightclub in Paris. Swizz stopped on the red carpet to show off the super dope black and grey Reebok Kamikaze III kicks that were recently released. Swizz also wore the Versace x H&M jacket that was previously worn by Kanye West. Swizz matched his with the silk scarf from the same collection in an attempt to cover his infamous 5-head. Although I do find the jacket to be a little too flamboyant for Swizzy’s sake, the look was pulled together and coordinated well. He could have maybe left the scarf on the rack and opted for a fitted instead.

NBA star John Wall

NBA lockout victim John Wall was also on hand wearing another colorway of the Reebok Kamikaze III sneakers. In contrast to Swizz, Wall’s look was more subdued with a G-Star Raw denim shirt accessorized with Louis Vuitton coin pouch. Tell us what you think about either of these looks.

New Music: Mike Posner – The Layover

0

Mike Posner has been on his grind these past few years. The singer, songwriter, producer and Duke Graduate is somewhat of a wonder child.  His latest work, The Layover,  is a great example of what all Posner has to offer. Guest verses compliment The Layover in every way possible i.e. BIG K.R.I.T, Slim Thug, Bun B, Twista , Casey Veggies, and Cyhi The Prince. The mixtape’s production is shockingly epic; the sonic makeup resembles a stadium performance that intoxicated fans will surely enjoy. The topics of love, lust, drugs and fun are fitting for a mid-twenties artist. The Layover chills from front to back and will certainly carry over into early 2012. Right around the release of his upcoming album Sky High. Listen here.

Because Love is a Drug… DMX and Estranged Wife to Appear on ‘Relationship Rehab’

0
Earl Simmons & Tashera Simmons

We’ve just got word from our friends in our gossiping head, TMZ, that former rapper DMX and his estranged wife Tashera Simmons will be appearing on a “Celebrity Rehab” spin off show on VH1 called “Relationship Rehab.”  From what we understand, the show will center around X (Earl Simmons) and his wife of 20 years Tashera, attempting to mend their marriage.

The couple who share four children between them separated in the summer of 2010. Interesting enough, it was back in the spring of that year when a judge denied that X participate in the filming for the VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab” due to him already being enrolled in an Arizona court-ordered substance abuse program.

Taping for the new show is scheduled to begin next month in December.  What do you think?  Undoubtedly this is a good look for Mr. & Mrs. Simmons. Not only does it give X a much needed boost to restart his career, but it also shows the effort one makes to hold on to a failing relationship (yes, we’re looking at you Demi and Ashton). Will you be watching?

WTF?!? Woman Hospitalized Due to Cement Butt Injections!!

0

Looks like one South Florida woman went a little bit too far to get that perfect Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj apple bottom. Huffington Post reported that a woman who has yet to be named, was searching for a plastic surgeon to enhance her derriere for a low price. The woman was directed to Oneal Ron Morris. Morris is a transgendered woman who allegedly performed the butt enhancement surgery on herself as well as others, and was posing as a doctor. Morris injected the woman with a toxic mixture of mineral oil, tire sealant, and wait for it… cement! The doctor wannabe, Morris, who has been seen driving around Miami in a black Mercedes Benz was arrested Friday and charged with practicing medicine without a license with serious bodily injury.

The victim paid Morris $700 for the injections and visited two South Florida hospitals, complaining of abdominal pain and infected sores on her buttocks. Both times, the victim was too embarrassed to stay for treatment, so she left. Finally, the victim’s mother took her to a hospital on Florida’s west coast where appalled doctors forced information out of her. The victim is now recovering from the surgery but has lost way more than $700 as she’s in too much pain to work and has racked up a large amount of medical bills. What do you think? Who’s most at fault? The victim for going to far just to have a nice bottom? Or Morris for acting as a doctor??
