BRONX, N.Y. — Javits Frimpong should have made it to school. The 15-year-old should have had another afternoon with his father, another year of classes and a chance to build the future his family envisioned when he came to America.
Instead, he was fatally shot during his morning walk on October 29, leaving his family mourning and his Bronx community demanding justice.
Now, a private donor has pledged a $100,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
The pledge comes as investigators search for answers in a killing that has prompted vigils, protests and urgent questions about the safety of children traveling to school.
Police found Javits with a gunshot wound to his abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. near East 171st Street and Crotona Place in the Claremont neighborhood. Responding officers placed him in their patrol car and rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital. He could not be saved. Investigators have been seeking three teenagers in connection with the shooting.
For his father, Thomas Frimpong, the loss has shattered the promise of their reunion. He told ABC7 that he brought Javits from Ghana about a year earlier, hoping to give him a better life. He remembered his son as quiet and clever. His last instruction that morning was a familiar parental reminder: get to school on time.
His father’s account of bullying has added painful questions to the investigation. Thomas said school officials had recently informed him that two students were suspended after incidents involving his son. He believes the shooting was connected. Police have not confirmed that bullying was the motive or established a connection between those incidents and the killing.
The grief has brought together relatives, neighbors, religious leaders and members of the Ghanaian community. At an October 31 gathering near the shooting scene, mourners called for accountability and action to prevent another family from suffering the same loss.
On November 2, students carried that demand outside their school. They marched with signs reading “Justice for Javits” and “Forever 15,” speaking about bullying, gun violence and their own fears for their safety. Their classmate’s death had turned the ordinary act of leaving home for school into a source of anxiety.
No arrests had been reported as of November 2.
Anyone with information about the shooting can contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or submit information through the Crime Stoppers website. Tips can be submitted confidentially.
Behind the reward pledge and the calls for justice is a child whose life deserves to be remembered beyond the violence that ended it—and a father who sent his son to school expecting him to come home.
