The Cincinnati Music Festival Features MC Lyte, Xscape, Tamar Braxton, Jill Scott & More( Recap)

The historical Cincinnati Jazz Festival aka Cincinnati Music Festival is a Midwest tradition making it the 2nd largest RnB Music Festival in the United States. Hosting over 90,000+ people for a 3-day musical, empowerment and cultural experience connecting music lovers with the sights, sounds, and spirit of the Queen City.

The Cincinnati Music Festival was held at the Paul Brown Stadium and included an exciting lineup of performances that featured Charlie Wilson, Tamar Braxton, Common, Xscape, Jill Scott, Keith Sweat, O’Jays, The Roots, After 7, Boyz II Men, and Cincinnati’s own Bootsy Collins.

The festival kicked off on Thursday with the Party with a Purpose Pre-Party hosted by MC Lyte and DJ Jazzy Jeff. The event included local performances and an Epic Fashion Show with Lead designer Chanel Meyers the creator of Shingo Fashions.

Procter & Gamble was this year’s lead sponsor and they included several brand experiences for spectators to enjoy during the festival. The experiences included the Gold Goddess Patio Spa that featured a self-service beauty bar for hair touch-ups and stylist consultations. The Old Spice Man Cave where men (and women) could kick back and play cards, or even air hockey. And the Ultimate Pre-show plaza that featured performances from local artist and musicians.

More than Just A  Music Festival…

This year’s festival included many activities throughout the Queen City that promoted Women’s Empowerment and Black Entrepreneurship.

The Women’s Liberation Workshop (WLW) was held Saturday, July 28th at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in the center of the Cincinnati Music Festival festivities. The event included a day of dance, fitness, yoga,  a financial panel, and a marketplace full of women-owned brands. The event creator Carmen Gaines created this event to be an incubator space for collectively conscious women to grow through fitness, entrepreneurship, connectedness, and education. It included an “interactive” empowerment workshop that highlighted key elements of feminism by addressing the intersecting oppressions of classism, racism, and sexism.

P&G’s My Black Is Beautiful collaborated with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Greater Cincinnati Association of Black Journalist to host the “Navigating Barriers and Possibilities” community event. The event included an opening keynote regarding entrepreneurship advancement for women by the legendary Hip Hop pioneer MC Lyte and Financial and Business Guru Dr. Lynn Richardson.

The weekend also included The Cincy Soul Black Taste this was a city-wide event created by Julian “Jay” Rodg. The event was held on Fountain Square in the heart of Cincinnati, it included free concerts, Black-owned food vendors and a plethora of black-owned businesses that created a “Wakanda like” vendors market for the 3 day weekend.

Capturing a National Platform…

Capturing the excitement of the weekend and bringing the events and conversations surrounding CMF to a national platform P&G partnered with the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) and their high-rated series, Love Is. This partnership will give the OWN audience an all-access look into the “best of the fest.” From celebrating empowerment amongst Black women at the community event to engaging with the festival’s hottest musical acts, and offering an up-close tour around P&G’s interactive brand experiences. These festival moments will air on August 7th during commercial breaks with the show.

Proctor & Gamble and will continue to support its home city by sponsoring the Cincinnati Music Festival through  2022. P&G’s Chief Diversity Officer, William P. Gipson shared that “during the past four years, we’ve witnessed the power of music and its authentic ability to encourage empowering messages, establish strong community connections, and foster an inclusive spirit while celebrating diversity.

The two were in Vegas for a business meeting for a new reality show when Stevie J. asked Faith to be his wife. While some believe this was quite a spontaneous decision but the fact of the matter is that two have had a on again off again relationship for years and they thought the time was right to tie the knot.

Kendrick Lamar Debuts His Acting Skills in the Latest Power Episode

Kendrick Lamar gave a stellar performance on the hit Crime Drama Power.

In the episode, Kendrick plays a homeless crackhead named Laces who walks up to 50 Cent outside a bodega and tries to sell him some gift cards. He later becomes a trusted sidekick assisting 50’s character commit several crimes.

Power Creator Courtney Kemp shares with EW that “Everyone always wants to play the same part. They all wanna play gangsters. Kendrick Lamar, however, was different. He made a cameo in tonight’s episode of Power because “he showed up to win.”

Kemp shared that Kendrick’s relationship with 50Cent  played a key role in her decision to have him make an appearance on the show.

“He and Kendrick … were hanging out and Kendrick said, ‘I’d really like to be on the show,’ and you know it goes from there. He’s really gifted, tremendously gifted. I mean it’s a total transformation. It is not a version of Kendrick Lamar that you’ve ever seen before. So it’s very exciting.”

We are not sure if Kendrick’s role will be a recurring role on the show. It’s not a bad idea for Kanan (50Cent) to have a sidekick to help him do dirty work. Only time will tell if we will see Laces return.

Pay Up! Viacom Demands The Game Pay Legal Fees in $20 Million Lawsuit

Game sued Viacom for $20 million last year demanding they be held liable for the $7.1 million judgment. The West coast rapper was sued by Pricilla Rainey for sexual assault on his VH1 reality show.  The Game argued Viacom should cover the bill due to them casting Rainey on the show. He claimed they knew of her multiple felony arrests for battery and that she suffered from mental health issues.

Viacom denied they should be liable for the $7.1 judgment and sought to have the entire case dismissed.

On June 5, the judge came back with his decision and sided with the media company by dismissing The Game’s case.

Now according to court documents obtained by The Blast, Viacom wants to be reimbursed for having to defend against the rapper’s $20,000,000 lawsuit. The media giant is asking the court to order Game to pay up for their defense, which cost them $35,729.50.

The judge has yet to rule.

Ving Rhames Shares His Experience with Racial Profiling in His Own Neighborhood

In an interview on SiriusXM’s “The Clay Cane Show” Friday, actor Ving Rhames shared that he was held at gunpoint — inside his own house — after a neighbor called the police on him.

According to TooFab.com Rhames said he was inside his Santa Monica home, watching ESPN in his basketball shorts, when he heard some commotion in his backyard. at first, Rhames thought it was just his bulldog puppies running around, but then he heard a knock at the front door.

“I get up, I open the door and there’s a red dot pointed at my face from a 9-millimeter [gun], and they say, ‘Put up your hands.’ Literally,” Rhames said.

He then explained that the police officers instructed him to open up the screen door with one hand and walk outside. In addition to the officer with the gun pointed at him, two other officers were on hand, including one with a police dog and the captain. The captain recognized Rhames.

“The captain of police — and you can check with the Santa Monica Police Department — he recognized me because my son played against his [son’s] school,” Rhames said. “They apologized and what have you.”

Rhames said he then asked the police why they were at his home. The officer told them that a woman in his neighborhood called and said a “large black man” was breaking in. “He said to me, ‘A woman called 911 [and] said a large black man was breaking into the house,’ and so they came,” Rhames explained, adding that the neighbor later denied making the call.

My problem is what if it was my son?

Rhames shared what concerned him the most about the incident was what would’ve happened if his 16- year- old son Freedom was at home. “My problem is what if it was my son and he had a video game remote or something, and you thought it was a gun?” Rhames said to Cane. “Just like, I don’t know, Trayvon had a bag of Skittles.” Refering to the police’s habit of mistakenly murdering unarmed black males.

It’s unfortunate that racial profiling is very common in suburban neighborhoods. Even hip hop rapper J. Cole had a swat team sent to his home because his neighbors thought he sold drugs, he even wrote a song about it.

The Santa Monica Police Department spokesperson also told TooFab the incident was one of several that contribtued to the launch of a “Meet Your Neighbors” program in January 2017.  “Many residents do not know their neighbors.” A press release for the initiative added, “Our challenge to the community is to step out of their comfort zone and get to know the people on their block – their neighbors.”

The Golden Fly (aka The Drip God Ivan G) is the child of street-fashion royalty Natasha Zinko. His designer mother began bringing her young protege to London fashion week when he was only nine, and The Golden Fly quickly found a love for being in the public eye. Since then he’s released his own clothing line DUO (now in over 20 stores internationally) and has begun recording an EP with super-producer Scott Storch (Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Snoop Dogg), with tracks featuring heavy-hitters Rich The Kid and Fat Joe. Many celebrities showed up to support The Golden Fly celebration with Bhad Bhabie, including Trinidad James, viral comedian and rapper Fatboy SSE, R&B king Eric Bellinger, and MTV’s Wild ‘N Out dancer Dan Rue. Cardi B Will Not Be Touring With Bruno Mars This Fall

Cardi B announced via instagram that she will not be joining Bruno Mars on the 24K Magic tour this fall. She states that she is not physically ready to get on the road especially with her new born baby Kulture.

 

Bruno Mars also posted a message on Twitter to Cardi about her decision to leave the tour.

“Most important thing is you and your family’s health. I know the fans will understand,” he wrote Cardi. “I also know we’ll share the stage when the time is right. We love you Cardi and we will play Bodak Yellow every night in your honor.”

The 24K Magic tour was scheduled to kick off on September 7th in Denver. Cardi B had just given birth on July 10th giving her only a month and a half to get ready for the tour. Cardi pushed herself while pregnant to complete her debut album Invasion of Privacy before the end of her second trimester. Typically women are cleared to head back to work after 6 weeks of postpartum. But if you are a mega star like Cardi B with a huge tour in the works 6 weeks of rest just won’t cut it.

We are happy to see her blossom into motherhood and make sound decisions on whats best for her and baby Kulture.

Take your time Cardi your fans will be waiting until you are ready.

A new opening act has not yet been announced. Earlier this year, the two teamed up for their collaborative “Finesse (Remix),” which they performed on the Grammys.

A California appeals court rejected a bid Wednesday to revive a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of Terry Carter, whose was killed during the 2015 production of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

Hip Hop Icons Dr.Dre and Ice Cube can rest easy now that they have been cleared by Califonia courts in the death of Terry Carter.

A California appeals court rejected a bid Wednesday to revive a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the family of Terry Carter, whose was killed during the 2015 production of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton when Suge Knight ran him over with a truck. The court agrees it wasn’t foreseeable that Knight would harm a local businessman who attempted to mediate a conflict during the production of the N.W.A biopic.

According to The Hollywood Reporter  in a civil lawsuit, Carter’s family alleged that NBCUniversal, Dre and Ice Cube were negligent and liable for wrongful death. The complaint was amended a couple of times, and Carter’s family struggled to articulate why the film producers should be held responsible for Knight’s actions. The theories put forward included that the filmmakers knew of Knight’s criminal history, his hostility to Dre and Ice Cube, and had negligently supervised Sloan, who was alleged to be a “known gangster and criminal with a more than ten-year history of ill will with [Knight].”

The California appeals court agrees with the trial judge in seeing a lack of foreseeability.

Even accepting the allegation that Sloan and Knight had violent tendencies toward each other, the opinion states “it still is not enough to permit a judgment that it would be foreseeable that a third party like Knight would harm a mediator at a meeting — particularly one [like Carter] who was, as plaintiffs allege, ‘well-respected’ by the third party.”

The appeals court judge later adds, “Indeed, on the facts alleged in the operative complaint, there is good reason to conclude any alleged confrontation between Sloan and Knight at Tam’s Burgers with Carter present would be non-violent. The earlier interaction between Sloan and Knight at base camp was, by plaintiffs’ own admission, non- violent, and plaintiffs make no allegation that Knight or Sloan made any threats of future harm or violence during their base camp exchange of words — nor that defendants ever directed Sloan to confront Knight in a violent manner.”

Despite Knight’s history of violence, the appeals court also doesn’t see any “prior similar incidents to warrant additional security for the meeting between Sloan and Knight”. No any voluntary assumption of a duty to protect Carter.

During the production of Straight Outta Compton filmmakers had hired  Cle “Bone” Sloan as a technical adviser to assist in security. When Knight appeared at base camp, Sloan confronted Knight and directed him to leave. After a verbal altercation, Knight did. Sometime later, a meeting was arranged at the parking lot of a nearby fast-food restaurant. Carter, a local businessman and somewhat of a mediator, was there. When tensions escalated, Knight hit his gas pedal, and ran over Carter.

Knight is awaiting trial for murder in September.

Bobby Brown Opens A Domestic Violence Center In Honor of His Daughter Bobbi Kristina

Bobby Brown is honoring his late daughter Bobbi Kristina by building the Bobbi Kristina Brown Serenity House a domestic violence shelter in Atlanta.

According to Vibe.com Mayor Bill Edwards of South Fulton will present Brown and his wife with a proclamation Monday.

“Our family lives with the pain every day of losing my beautiful daughter, Bobbi Kristina, to domestic violence,” Brown said in a statement. “She loved Atlanta and in her memory, we are proud to announce the formation of the Bobbi Kristina Serenity House. Our initial goal is to help educate women and men of all ages, by creating a 24-hour crisis intervention line and emergency transitional shelter.”

Bobbi Kristina was only 22 years old when she was found unresponsive in her bathtub in 2015 inside her Atlanta home. She died six months later.

Her boyfriend, Nick Gordon was looked at as a person of interest. Gordon was later found responsible in a wrongful death lawsuit and ordered to pay $36 million to the Bobbi Kristina estate.

Brooklyn’s Otis Bruno went through no less than 2 years worth of recorded material to compile the 7-song EP that comprises “Heartbreak Theory.” Even as his single, “Lean to the Right”, a certified club banger, is heating up both parties and airwaves from NY’s Hot 97 to Texas, the New York up-and-comer felt it was important to show that he is, in fact, a well rounded artist; even this early in.

“I went thru almost 2 years of songs for the e.p. just wanting to actually capture who I was as a person on this project. The title came from me thinking of all the ways a persons heart can be broken; not just with love but also failed friendship, family etc..and also love of course lol. I just wanted to show my supporters and the music industry who I am as a well-rounded artist and not just a club record or single.” He shares. “I’m really proud of the way I did that.”

With his debut single, “Lean to the Right” currently reigning as the breakout hit from this newly released project, Otis had this to say about its creation.

“Well for years me and Ricky Blaze talked about working on a record together but never got to actually make it happen. One day he called my phone and invited me to his studio and he was playing me beats and we ended up making something from scratch. I told him I want it to be a simple but bump at the same time. Soon as he did the baseline I started rapping automatically….literally wrote the song in 20 minutes, went in the booth and layed it down naturally. We just both was vibin heavy and in the moment and the record just happened! From there it was a go! I put the song on Soundcloud, Kid the Great danced to it and after that, it started catchin a wave online…. “

Bruno can count Hot 97’s Drewski, who has the song in his mix currently, as one of the newly converted. Stay tuned.

Murder suspect #3 In The Death of XXXTentacion Has Been Arrested

A suspect has been arrested over the murder of the rapper XXXTentacion who was shot dead in Florida in June.

Dodge County sheriff’s deputies placed Robert Allen, of Fort Lauderdale, in a prison in the city of Eastman after members of the US Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested him on Wednesday, according to local news paper The Macon Telegraph.

“They got some information he was up in Eastman, possibly staying with his sister,” Deputy US Marshal John Edgar said.

Mr Allen – who is also known as “Big Rob” and “Fat Boy” – was captured on surveillance video minutes before XXXTentacion was robbed of $50,000 in cash in a Louis Vuitton bag and shot in June.

The 20-year-old rising young star – whose real name was Jaseh Onfroy – was fatally shot as he was leaving a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach.

Beyoncé gave us all a little view of her family life by sharing a sweet photo of her twins. The Superstar shared the photo of herself holding her 13-month-old twins Rumi and Sir in her lap during a family trip to Europe on her website.

Jay Z and Beyonce decided to bring their children on the road with them for their joint On the Run Tour II, that kicked off June 6 in Cardiff, U.K.

Sources close to the couple told PEOPLE “They are incredibly excited. It took a lot of work to make this happen. It’s the best choice for their family.”

The reigning power couple kicked off thier US OTRII tour last night in Cleveland, Ohio. The Carters have reaffirmed their dominance and their strength as a couple they’ve traveled from stadium to stadium with an epic show generating millions.
 They will continue hitting major stadiums in cities including Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago, and more. This tour has been seemingly focused around Love.
It looks like the couple will be breaking their own touring records. Since their last joint OTR tour, the couple grossed $96 million in the first 19 North American shows and $110 million worldwide. The dynamic duo is expecting to double these numbers upon the completion of their world tour.
